Why Vietnamese is hard to understand
Six tones
- Six different words can look identical on the lips
- Vietnamese has six lexical tones — flat (ngang), falling (huyền), questioning (hỏi), broken (ngã), sharp rising (sắc), and heavy falling (nặng). Each changes the meaning of the syllable. Like Mandarin, tones are pitch contours produced in the larynx — invisible on the lips. In a formal Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City interview, a deaf candidate watching the interviewer may see one lip shape where six different words could be intended.
Northern-Southern dialect gap
- Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Vietnamese are phonologically distinct
- Northern Vietnamese (Hanoi standard) and Southern Vietnamese (Ho Chi Minh City) differ significantly in tone inventory — Northern has six distinct tones; Southern merges some. They also differ in initial consonants: Northern uses /z/ for 'd', Southern uses /j/. An interviewer from Hanoi and one from Ho Chi Minh City produce different lip patterns for the same words, and a deaf candidate trained on one variety faces a different phonological system in the other city.
Sino-Vietnamese register
- Formal interview Vietnamese uses Hán-Việt vocabulary unknown from everyday speech
- Formal Vietnamese — used in interviews, official contexts, and business — draws heavily on Sino-Vietnamese (Hán-Việt) vocabulary borrowed from Chinese. Words like 'phỏng vấn' (interview), 'năng lực' (competency), 'kinh nghiệm' (experience) are Sino-Vietnamese. A deaf candidate whose visual vocabulary comes from everyday native Vietnamese words may not recognize formal Hán-Việt register terms.
Vietnamese-English switching
- Ho Chi Minh City corporate interviews mix Vietnamese and English mid-sentence
- In Ho Chi Minh City's multinational and tech sector interviews, English terms enter Vietnamese mid-sentence — 'deadline', 'teamwork', 'performance review'. A deaf candidate tracking Vietnamese is suddenly watching English words without warning, and the switch back to Vietnamese may begin with a tonal syllable that looks identical to several others.

UNDP Vietnam noted in 2023 that the country has made progress in building inclusive policy frameworks but that implementation is limited by weak data, inconsistent enforcement, and low employer awareness. Research published in PMC on the economic lives of people with disabilities in Vietnam identified discrimination by employers as the single greatest perceived barrier to securing paid employment — more significant than educational gaps or physical access barriers.
Vietnamese disability policy includes legal provisions for employment inclusion, but the interview process remains a structural barrier for deaf candidates. Vietnam has no national captioning standard for the workplace, and sign language interpretation at job interviews is not a legal requirement. Disclosure before an interview may invite discrimination.
