Why Hindi is hard to understand
Retroflex-dental collapse
- ट/ठ/ड/ढ and त/थ/द/ध look identical on the lips
- Hindi distinguishes retroflex consonants (ट, ठ, ड, ढ — produced with the tongue curled to the hard palate) from dental consonants (त, थ, द, ध — produced with the tongue at the teeth). The two sets sound completely different but produce near-identical visible lip movement. In a fast interview question, a deaf candidate watching the interviewer's mouth cannot distinguish these pairs.
Aspiration pairs
- Aspirated and unaspirated stops look the same
- Hindi contrasts aspirated and unaspirated stop pairs: प/फ, ट/ठ, क/ख, ब/भ. The aspiration is a burst of breath — acoustic, not visible. A lip-reader watching an interviewer ask about 'पद' (position) versus 'फन' (skill) or 'बाज़ार' versus 'भाषा' has no visible cue to distinguish the words.
Hinglish code-switching
- Interview questions mix Hindi and English unpredictably
- Indian corporate interviews — particularly in IT, banking, and consulting — routinely switch between Hindi and English mid-sentence. An interviewer might ask half a question in Hindi and complete it with an English phrase. A deaf candidate tracking one language is suddenly watching a sentence in another, with no transition signal visible on the lips.
Formal register gap
- Interview Hindi uses Sanskrit-derived vocabulary unfamiliar from everyday speech
- Formal Hindi draws heavily on Sanskritic vocabulary — words that appear in professional and official contexts but not in everyday Hindustani. An interviewer at a Delhi government office or a formal corporate setting may use terms that even hearing Hindi speakers unfamiliar with high register would need to process. For a deaf candidate, these are words without established visual patterns.
Fast elision
- Intervocalic consonants drop in fast interview speech
- In rapid spoken Hindi, intervocalic consonants soften and often disappear across word boundaries. In a time-pressured interview, speech rate increases and elision intensifies. A sentence that is phonologically clear at a slow pace becomes a rapid stream with collapsed consonants and reduced vowels.

India has an estimated 63 million people with significant hearing loss — one of the largest deaf and hard of hearing populations in the world. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act 2016 mandates a 4% employment quota for people with disabilities in government jobs and requires reasonable workplace accommodations including captioning and visual alert systems. In practice, implementation is deeply uneven. Studies have found that recruitment practices at formal-sector employers have historically favoured applicants with less than 40% hearing impairment — a threshold that excludes a large portion of the deaf and hard of hearing community from eligible roles.
The interview itself is where the exclusion is most acute. Indian corporate and government interviews are fast, formal, and conducted in either Hindi or English — or, commonly, in both at once. No mechanism requires the interviewer to provide captioning, no legal standard mandates a sign language interpreter for the hiring stage, and disclosure risks introducing bias before the candidate's qualifications are even considered. The UNDP's 2023 analysis of disability inclusion in India's private sector found that while a growing number of IT companies have diversity and inclusion commitments, specific provisions for deaf and hard of hearing candidates in the interview process remain rare.
The upstream barriers compound the interview challenge. Late identification of hearing loss in India — driven by limited neonatal screening and a shortage of audiologists outside major cities — means many deaf and hard of hearing children enter the school system without timely support, leading to educational gaps that affect employment readiness. By the time a deaf candidate reaches an interview in Mumbai or Delhi, they are navigating a hiring system that was not designed for them.
