Why Macedonian is hard to understand
Fixed antepenultimate stress
- Stress always on the third-from-last syllable
- Macedonian has a fixed antepenultimate stress rule — in words of three or more syllables, the accent always falls on the third syllable from the end. This is unusual among Slavic languages and produces a rhythm very different from what a deaf reader calibrated on Serbian or Bulgarian expects, disrupting the pattern-matching that supports lip-reading.
Western–Eastern dialect split
