37% of deaf people have experienced discrimination during a job interview (Raliance, 2023). Fewer than 40% of people with a hearing disability work full time, compared to higher rates in the general population (U.S. Census Bureau). These numbers are not driven by a lack of qualifications — deaf and hard of hearing candidates frequently hold the same credentials as hearing peers. They are driven, in part, by what happens in the room during the interview itself.
The interview format is built around speech — fast, unstructured, with no transcript, no repeats, and a dynamic that punishes any sign of confusion. Asking for a repeat is not neutral. It reads as distraction, or a failure to understand the question. Answering the wrong question because you caught part of it is worse. The hearing candidate next to you processed the same question with no effort. You spent cognitive bandwidth on following it. Neither the stakes nor the scoring system accounts for that difference.
Requesting formal accommodations in advance creates its own risk. Research found that deaf job candidates who requested accommodations like sign language interpreters sometimes had their interviews cancelled suddenly (Deaf Job Wizard). Disclosing before the interview opens the door to bias. Not disclosing and struggling in the room produces a different problem. It is a dilemma the hiring process creates — not one the candidate should have to solve.
