Why Turkish is hard to understand
Consonant mutation
- Final consonants change when suffixes are added — same word, different lip shape
- Turkish consonant mutation (softening) changes final stops k/t/ç/p to g/d/c/b when a vowel-initial suffix follows. The same root word appears with a different final consonant depending on grammatical context. In a formal interview question, the inflected form of a noun or verb may look different on the lips from the bare root form a deaf candidate recognises.
Agglutinative suffix stacking
- Turkish interview questions can be a single long word ending at the verb
- Turkish stacks suffixes onto verb and noun roots in sequence — tense, aspect, negation, person, and number all added one after another. A single Turkish verb can be a 10-syllable word delivering the entire predicate. In a fast interview question, the verb arrives at the end as a long agglutinated unit requiring the lip-reader to track each suffix in sequence.
Vowel harmony opacity
- Suffix vowels are predictable by rule but compress visually in fast speech
- Turkish vowel harmony means every suffix vowel matches the backness and roundness of the root vowel. This is grammatically elegant but creates long sequences of similar-quality vowels across an agglutinated word. In fast interview speech, these harmonically related vowel sequences compress visually into a stream of similar mouth positions.
Formal register
- Turkish corporate interviews use formal vocabulary distinct from everyday speech
- Turkish corporate interviews — especially at financial institutions, government agencies, and large manufacturers — use a formal register with Ottoman-derived and French loanword vocabulary uncommon in everyday Türkçe. A deaf candidate whose visual vocabulary comes from daily informal Turkish faces unfamiliar word roots in a formal hiring context.

Turkish Sign Language (TİD) has approximately 250,000 signers in Turkey. A much larger population — estimated in the hundreds of thousands — is hard of hearing or has significant hearing loss but does not use sign language. Turkey's disability legislation includes employment provisions requiring large employers to maintain a percentage of disabled workers, and Turkish employment policy is moving toward a 3.5% disability employment quota target by 2029. A 2022–2023 cochlear implant study published in PMC collected data from 142 participants with severe hearing loss across all regions of Turkey, documenting ongoing employment challenges even for those who had received cochlear implant treatment.
In the Turkish labour market, the interview process at major Istanbul employers — in banking, manufacturing, retail, and the public sector — is structured, fast, and conducted entirely in spoken Turkish. No legal requirement mandates captioning or TİD interpretation at the interview stage. Requesting an interpreter in advance is uncommon and can raise questions about the candidate's communication ability before qualifications are evaluated. Not requesting it means managing a formal Turkish interview without any visual support.
The structure of Turkish amplifies the barrier. Turkish puts the verb at the end of the sentence and stacks suffixes in agglutinative chains that produce long words carrying dense grammatical information. A formal interview question may arrive as a multi-clause sentence ending in a complex verb form. By the time the verb appears, earlier clauses may have been partially lost.
