Why Latvian is hard to understand
Three-tone pitch system
- Level, falling, and broken tones — all invisible
- Standard Latvian has three phonemic tones on long vowels and diphthongs: level, falling, and broken. These tones distinguish word meaning entirely through pitch contour with no visible lip or face movement. In a job interview, dozens of common words differ only in tone — a distinction completely inaccessible to a deaf reader.
Broken tone (stieptā intonācija)
- A glottal element that changes meaning
- The broken tone in Latvian involves a glottal element — a sudden voice quality interruption — superimposed on the vowel. Like Danish stød, it is produced entirely in the larynx with zero visible facial signal. A deaf reader cannot detect it, yet it marks a phonemic distinction in common vocabulary.
Livonian dialect substrate
- Finno-Ugric influence on western speech
- The Livonian dialect, spoken in western Kurzeme, carries extensive vowel reductions and simplifications from the historically adjacent Livonian language (a Finno-Ugric tongue now extinct). An interviewer from Kurzeme may use vowel patterns that do not correspond to standard Latvian expectations.
Latgalian variety
- A distinct eastern variety with different phonology
- Latgalian, spoken in eastern Latvia, has its own orthography, phonology, and vocabulary and is sometimes classified as a separate language. An interviewer from Daugavpils or Rēzekne may use Latgalian features that fall entirely outside what a standard-Latvian-calibrated deaf reader expects.
Latvian–Russian switching
- Two languages in one Riga office
- Latvia has a substantial Russian-speaking minority, and in Riga professional settings, speakers frequently switch between Latvian and Russian — especially within the same organisation. Both language streams can appear in the same interview and both must be tracked.
