Why Serbian is hard to understand
Ekavian–Ijekavian gap
- Same words, different vowels
- The same vocabulary sounds entirely different depending on whether the interviewer uses Serbia's Ekavian or Bosnia and Montenegro's Ijekavian pronunciation. Without sound, these vowel substitutions disrupt familiar words at a critical moment in the interview.
Pitch accent system
- Four accents, zero lip movement
- Serbian carries meaning through four distinct pitch accents — rising and falling, long and short — that produce no visible face movement. An identical string of lip shapes can encode four different meanings depending on pitch alone.
Formal–casual register shift
