Why Ukrainian is hard to understand
10 palatalized consonants
- Half of Ukrainian's consonant inventory has soft and hard versions — both invisible
- Ukrainian has 10 palatalized (soft) consonant phonemes: /dʲ, zʲ, lʲ, nʲ, rʲ, sʲ, tʲ, ʦʲ, dzʲ, j/. Each soft consonant is produced by simultaneously raising the tongue toward the hard palate — entirely inside the mouth, invisible on the lips. In a formal Kyiv or Lviv interview, these contrasts carry grammatical and lexical meaning and are systematically unresolvable from lip observation.
Consonant clusters
- Ukrainian allows complex initial and medial clusters in interview vocabulary
- Ukrainian permits complex consonant clusters in natural vocabulary — 'вдрукувати', 'встановлення', 'пристрій'. In fast corporate interview speech, these clusters produce rapid consonant sequences where individual sounds overlap and visual segmentation becomes impossible.
H vs G distinction
- Ukrainian /h/ and /ɦ/ are produced in the larynx — no lip movement
- Ukrainian uses /h/ (as in German 'haben') and /ɦ/ (a voiced glottal fricative) where many Slavic languages use /g/. Both are produced in the larynx with no visible lip movement. In interview vocabulary, words containing these sounds look identical on the lips to words without them.
Post-2022 register shift
- Urban Ukrainian has shifted away from Russian-Ukrainian mixing since 2022
- Before 2022, many urban Ukrainian professionals used Surzhyk (mixed Ukrainian-Russian) or switched to Russian in formal contexts. Since 2022, Ukrainian is used predominantly in formal and professional settings. For a deaf candidate whose lip-reading vocabulary was built on mixed urban speech, the current formal Ukrainian interview register may include unfamiliar literary vocabulary and less familiar visual patterns.
Literary formal register
- Official interview Ukrainian draws on Western Ukrainian and Latin-derived vocabulary
- Formal written and interview Ukrainian uses literary register with Polish- and Latin-derived vocabulary (компетенція, кваліфікація, резюме) distinct from everyday colloquial eastern Ukrainian speech. A deaf candidate unfamiliar with western literary Ukrainian may not recognize these formal register terms from lip shapes.

Ukraine ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and has disability employment legislation providing for quotas and accommodations. Since February 2022, Ukraine's labour market has been under martial law, with significant disruption: the number of unemployed and job seekers has significantly exceeded available vacancies, and persons with disabilities — including deaf and hard of hearing people — face additional displacement and instability. The Polish Association of the Deaf (PZG), documented by the European Union of the Deaf, has been coordinating support for deaf Ukrainian refugees arriving in Poland, highlighting the scale of deaf displacement.
For deaf Ukrainians remaining in Ukraine, the employment landscape has shifted alongside the linguistic one. The post-2022 move toward full Ukrainian in professional settings — replacing the earlier Russian-Ukrainian mixed register — has created a formal interview environment where some deaf candidates face unfamiliar literary Ukrainian vocabulary that was less common in pre-war urban professional speech. The formal interview at a Ukrainian company, international NGO, or government agency is now entirely in literary Ukrainian, a register that differs from the mixed urban speech some deaf candidates are most familiar with.
