Why Kazakh is hard to understand
Vowel harmony suffix stacking
- Kazakh suffixes harmonize in front-back vowels — producing compressed identical sequences
- Kazakh has 9 vowels with strict front-back vowel harmony — every suffix vowel matches the root. In a formal interview question, a long agglutinated Kazakh word produces multiple suffix vowels all harmonically consistent with the root, creating a rapid sequence of similar-quality vowels in fast speech where each individual suffix is hard to separate by visual lip shape alone.
Kazakh-Russian bilingual switching

SOV sentence structure with agglutinated verb
- The predicate arrives last — after all objects and modifiers
- Kazakh is a Subject-Object-Verb language with agglutinative morphology. The main predicate — the word that tells you what type of question was asked — arrives at the very end of the sentence after all object phrases and subordinate clauses. In a compound formal interview question, a deaf candidate must track the entire sentence before reaching the verb.
Formal register lexical gap

This bottleneck at the education stage means many deaf and hard of hearing Kazakhstani adults reach the formal job market with credentials and skills concentrated in specific vocational tracks, limiting access to the higher-skilled roles where corporate interview processes apply. Kazakhstan's Law on Social Protection of Persons with Disabilities provides a legal framework, but interview-stage accommodation is not a standard requirement.
Kazakhstan's major employers — in the energy sector (oil and gas), banking, telecommunications, and a growing IT industry — conduct hiring interviews in Almaty and Nur-Sultan in Kazakh, Russian, or a mix of both. The bilingual professional environment creates a language-switching interview format that has no predictable structure: a question may begin in Kazakh and complete in Russian, or be asked entirely in Russian by an interviewer who is Kazakh-dominant in informal speech. A deaf candidate must track two languages simultaneously with no visual signal of the switch.
