Why Greek is hard to understand
Formal register legacy
- Greek corporate interviews use elevated vocabulary with ancient Greek roots
- While Katharevousa (the archaic formal register) was officially abolished in 1976, Modern Greek corporate and government interviews continue to use elevated vocabulary with ancient Greek roots that differs from everyday Demotic speech. A deaf candidate whose visual vocabulary comes from casual Greek conversation may not recognise the formal Latinate-or-ancient-Greek-derived terms used in an Athens banking or law firm interview.
Guttural Rho
- The Greek ρ (rho) is produced at the back of the throat with no lip movement
- Modern Greek ρ is typically a uvular approximant or uvular trill — produced at the back of the throat, not the front of the mouth. In fast interview speech, it produces almost no visible lip movement. Greek words containing ρ — which are very common — look identical on the lips to the same words without the ρ.
Stress-dependent meaning
- Greek stress placement changes meaning — but stress is not visible on the lips
- Modern Greek uses stress placement to distinguish meanings — 'πότε' (when) vs 'ποτέ' (never), 'μία' (a/one) vs 'μια' (one). In fast interview speech, stress is carried acoustically, not visually. A lip-reader cannot determine which syllable is stressed from observing lip shapes alone.
Regional phonological variation
- Athenian, Thessaloniki, Cretan, and Cypriot Greek differ significantly
- Standard Modern Greek is based on Athenian pronunciation, but regional varieties differ significantly. Cretan Greek has distinct consonant patterns. Cypriot Greek is substantially different from standard Modern Greek in vowel length, geminate consonants, and some vocabulary. An interview for a Cyprus-based role sounds phonologically different from an Athens interview.

Greece's general employment rate in 2023 was 61.8% — 8.6 percentage points below the EU27 average. Research published in the European Journal of Special Education Research documented the implementation of the UN CRPD for deaf and hard of hearing students in Greece, finding that career guidance services for deaf students remained limited by resource constraints and ingrained institutional prejudices, and that digital inclusion efforts faced obstacles in consistent implementation. Greece's National Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2024–2030 has been identified as a potential framework for addressing these gaps — but it is a forward-looking document, not an achieved outcome.
Greece's economic sectors — shipping, tourism, banking, and technology — run hiring interviews in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Piraeus that are structured verbal processes in Greek without standard captioning. The EU Disability Forum has found that across Europe, the majority of persons with disabilities remain locked out of quality employment. In Greece, where general unemployment has historically been higher than the EU average, this exclusion is compounded by a labour market where competition for roles is intense and where any communication barrier at the interview stage reduces a candidate's prospects significantly.
Greek's linguistic structure adds a specific phonological dimension. The uvular rho produces no visible lip movement. Stress placement — which changes meaning in Greek — is acoustic, not visible. Regional variation between Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete, and Cyprus means a deaf candidate may face different lip shapes depending on the interviewer's background.
