Why Croatian is hard to understand
Three-dialect split
- One country, three very different sound systems
- Croatian has three distinct supradialects: Shtokavian (the standard), Chakavian along the Adriatic coast, and Kajkavian in the Zagreb region. An interviewer from Zagreb may use Kajkavian vowel shifts and vocabulary that differ substantially from the standard Croatian a deaf reader prepared for.
Pitch accent system
