Why Tagalog is hard to understand
Taglish code-switching
- Filipino corporate interviews switch between Tagalog and English in every sentence
- Taglish — the pervasive mixing of Tagalog and English within individual utterances — is the dominant mode of professional communication in Metro Manila and Philippine corporate settings. Research on Filipino code-switching found that all identified speakers in formal interview settings used both Tagalog and English at varying rates, often within a single sentence. A deaf candidate cannot predict which language the next phrase will be in, and the switch produces no visible signal on the lips.
Glottal stop
- Tagalog's phonemic glottal stop is completely invisible
- Tagalog has a phonemic glottal stop — an abrupt closure of the vocal folds — that changes word meaning. Minimal pairs like 'baba' (chin) and 'babà' (go down), or 'asa' (hope) and 'asà' (depend), differ only in the glottal stop. The glottal stop is produced by closing the vocal cords behind the lips — it produces no visible lip movement whatsoever. In a fast Manila interview, glottal stop pairs are systematically invisible to a lip-reader.
Philippine English accent
- Filipino interviewers' English has distinct vowel qualities and prosody
- When Filipino interviewers switch to English in an interview, their pronunciation reflects Philippine English phonology — different vowel qualities, different stress patterns, and different intonation from American or British English. A deaf candidate trying to track code-switched English from a Filipino interviewer watches phonological patterns different from the standard English they may have learned to lip-read.
Formal Filipino register
- Formal Filipino draws on vocabulary from regional languages and Spanish loanwords
- Formal Filipino (the standardized national language) includes vocabulary from Tagalog, other Philippine regional languages (Visayan, Ilocano), and Spanish loanwords that do not appear in everyday Manila Tagalog. In a formal government or corporate interview, these formal register terms present unfamiliar lip patterns for a candidate whose visual vocabulary comes from casual Metro Manila speech.

In January 2022, out of 1.9 million working-age Filipinos with disabilities, only 353,000 — less than one in five — were part of the workforce, compared to 60.5% labour force participation for the general population. A Rappler investigation found that persons with disabilities continue to struggle to join the Philippine workforce and remain disproportionately poor. In Cebu City alone, disability authority data from 2024 traced only 64 of approximately 16,000 registered PWDs as employed — around 0.4%. Deaf individuals form a subset of this already severely under-employed population.
The Philippine Magna Carta for Disabled Persons (Republic Act 7277) and its amendments provide for reasonable workplace accommodation and a 1% employment quota for PWDs in private companies with 100 or more workers. In practice, interview-stage accommodations for deaf candidates — captioning, sign language interpretation — are not a standard offering at most Philippine employers. Research on deaf employees in Philippine private sector industries (RSISINTERNATIONAL, 2024) found persistent barriers to quality employment even for those who had secured roles.
The linguistic character of the Philippine interview amplifies the structural barrier. Taglish — systematic Tagalog-English mixing — means a deaf candidate must track two languages simultaneously without prediction. Glottal stops that carry lexical meaning are entirely invisible on the lips. Philippine English has distinct phonological patterns from standard American or British English.
