Why Finnish is hard to understand
Phonemic vowel length
- Two words, one shape
- Finnish contrasts short and long versions of every vowel — muta ('mud') vs muuta ('other'). The long vowel is held roughly twice as long but has no different lip shape. In a fast interview, these minimal pairs are visually identical and can only be distinguished from the audio.
Phonemic consonant length
- Gemination that is invisible
- Finnish also contrasts short and long consonants — tulla ('to come') vs tuulla ('to be windy'). The geminated consonant is held longer but the lip contact is identical. Dozens of common word pairs look the same and sound different.
Agglutinative suffix chains
- Meaning stacked at the word's end
- Finnish attaches multiple grammatical suffixes to each word — case, possession, negation, and tense can all be encoded in a suffix chain. In fast professional speech these suffixes reduce and the end of the word, where the critical meaning sits, compresses toward silence.
Eastern dialect neutralisation
- Quantity distinctions that disappear
- Eastern Finnish dialects (Savo group) neutralise the vowel quantity contrasts that standard Finnish preserves, shifting the rhythm of familiar words. A deaf reader calibrated on standard Finnish faces a different system when interviewing with an eastern speaker.
Vowel harmony interaction with suffixes
- Suffix shapes that change by word
- Finnish vowel harmony requires suffixes to match the front or back vowel class of the root. The same grammatical suffix sounds different depending on the word it attaches to — adding phonological variation a deaf reader must track across every word in the sentence.
