Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

👔In-person interviews

In a Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, or Kozhikode office — an interviewer speaking Malayalam at professional pace. Captio AI captions every question in real time so you read the full sentence before responding.

💻Video interviews

Google Meet or Zoom in Malayalam corporate environments — from Kochi IT parks to Thiruvananthapuram government offices. Follow every question in real time without asking for repeats.

📞Phone screens and initial calls

HR screening calls in Malayalam — fast, formal, often with English terms mid-sentence. Captio AI captions in real time so compressed audio and code-switching do not become barriers.

👥Panel interviews

Panel interviews at Kerala-based companies, public sector institutions, or multinationals in Kochi. Captio AI follows each panelist even as they shift between Malayalam and English.

🌍International and foreign-language interviews

For roles at multinationals in Kerala or Gulf-based employers interviewing Malayalam speakers where interviews mix Malayalam and English. Live Translator handles both in the same session.

🎯Assessment centres

Group discussions and competency assessments — common in Indian banking and management graduate hiring, including Kerala-based employers. Captio AI covers facilitator instructions and all contributions.

Why Captio AI

Built for the room where a missed word has real consequences

Read the full question before you answer

Every word appears on screen as the interviewer speaks. You read the question completely before responding — nothing guessed, nothing reconstructed.

Works in person and on any call format

In-person interviews, video calls, phone screens. Place the phone on the table or point it toward the audio — Captio AI handles every format.

Discreet by design

The app runs quietly on your phone. Place it on the table or hold it naturally. No explanation needed, no drawing attention to the accommodation.

No asking for repeats

Asking an interviewer to repeat a question signals uncertainty. Captio AI means you never need to — you read it in real time and answer with confidence.

Any language

For international roles, multilingual panels, or interviews conducted in a second language. Live Translator captions and translates in real time so language is never the barrier.

Private by default

Interview conversations are sensitive. Captio AI processes audio in real time and discards it immediately — nothing is stored, nothing is shared.

Malayalam

Why Malayalam is hard to understand

Most complex consonant inventory

  • Malayalam has dental, alveolar, AND retroflex distinctions — all invisible on lips
  • Malayalam has one of the most complex consonant inventories of any language — it distinguishes dental, alveolar, and retroflex positions for multiple consonant types including laterals, nasals, and trills. The distinction between dental /t/, alveolar /t̺/, and retroflex /ʈ/ is phonemically meaningful. All three are produced inside the mouth with no visible lip difference. In a formal Kerala interview, a deaf candidate's lip-reading provides almost no information about which of these three positions the interviewer is using.

Formal-colloquial diglossia

  • Literary Malayalam in formal interviews differs from everyday colloquial speech
  • Formal Malayalam — used in official contexts, media, and corporate interviews — draws on literary vocabulary and grammatical forms distinct from everyday colloquial speech in Kerala. A deaf candidate who has built a visual vocabulary around colloquial Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram speech may face unfamiliar literary forms in a formal interview at a major Kerala employer.

Malayalam-English switching

  • Corporate Kerala interviews mix Malayalam and English mid-sentence
  • Kerala has among the highest English literacy rates in India, and corporate and professional interviews in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode routinely mix Malayalam and English within single sentences. A deaf candidate tracking Malayalam may suddenly watch an English phrase they were not expecting, with no visible signal of the language shift.

Long agglutinated compounds

  • Malayalam builds long compound words in formal interview vocabulary
  • Malayalam agglutinates extensively — long compound words and morphological sequences in formal interview speech produce dense syllable strings. In a formal interview, the interviewer may use a compound word that carries several morphological layers, producing a rapid sequence of syllables that a lip-reader must parse individually in fast speech.

Regional variation across Kerala

  • Malabar, Trichur, and Thiruvananthapuram Malayalam differ on the lips
  • Northern Kerala (Malabar/Kozhikode) Malayalam sounds different from central (Trichur/Kochi) and southern (Thiruvananthapuram) varieties. Vowel qualities and some consonant patterns differ across Kerala. An interviewer from Kozhikode produces different lip shapes for the same words than one from the capital.

The Challenge

63 million with hearing loss in India — and Kerala's high-literacy economy still excludes deaf candidates at interview

India has 63 million people with significant hearing loss, and Kerala — with one of India's highest literacy rates and a large formal employment sector — is home to a significant share of this population. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act 2016 mandates a 4% employment quota in government jobs and requires reasonable accommodations. In Kerala's government service, banking, and IT sectors, these provisions exist in law but interview-stage captioning remains uncommon. The Deaf Enabled Foundation operates across South India including Kerala, providing vocational training and job placement — but the interview itself remains an unstructured spoken format with no mandated visual support.

Kerala's Gulf connection adds a specific dimension: a large proportion of Malayali workers are employed in the Gulf Cooperation Council states — Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait — and must attend job interviews either in Kerala before departure or in the Gulf itself. Gulf interviews for Malayali workers are often conducted in English or Arabic, adding a language barrier on top of the access barrier for deaf candidates. The World Bank RIGHTS project covering disability in South India (rooted in Tamil Nadu but applicable across the South Indian context) confirms the access gaps that persist despite Kerala's relative prosperity.

For deaf Malayali candidates, the phonological demands of Malayalam amplify the interview access gap. The most complex consonant inventory of any major Indian language — three-way place-of-articulation distinctions — means lip-reading Malayalam provides less phonemic information per syllable than most other languages. Captio AI requires no employer arrangement: open the app, place the phone on the desk, and every Malayalam sentence — formal literary vocabulary included — appears in real time from audio, not from lips.
