Why Azerbaijani is hard to understand
Vowel harmony suffix chains
- Suffix vowels harmonize with the root — compressing into rapid identical sequences
- Azerbaijani has strict vowel harmony: every suffix vowel matches the backness and roundness of the root vowel. In a formal interview question, a long agglutinated word produces multiple suffix vowels all harmonically consistent with the root — a rapid sequence of similar vowel qualities at professional speech rates, where distinguishing one suffix from another by lip shape alone becomes unreliable.
Back-throat consonants
- Azerbaijani's velar and uvular sounds produce no visible lip movement
- Azerbaijani has velar fricatives (x /x/) and uvular sounds in borrowed vocabulary that are produced at the back of the throat — far behind the lips. In a formal Baku office interview, these consonants appear in common words and produce no visible lip movement whatsoever for a deaf candidate watching the interviewer's face.
Azerbaijani-Russian switching
