Why Thai is hard to understand
Five lexical tones
- The same syllable lip shape means five different things depending on pitch
- Thai has five lexical tones — mid, low, falling, high, and rising — that change the meaning of every syllable. These tones are produced by pitch contours in the larynx, not by lip movement. In a Bangkok interview room, a deaf candidate watching the interviewer's lips sees one syllable shape where five different words could be intended. Thai lip-reading research confirms that tonal distinctions are entirely invisible.
Three consonant classes
- The class of a consonant determines its tone — but class is invisible on the lips
- Thai groups all its consonants into three classes (high, mid, low), and the class of the initial consonant of a syllable determines which tone pattern it takes. The same vowel and consonant combination can take different tones depending on the class of the initial consonant — an invisible grammatical feature that makes syllable interpretation by lip-reading doubly ambiguous.
Formal register
- Thai corporate interviews use polite-register vocabulary with royal/formal terms
- Thai has a formal polite register that adds polite particles (ครับ, ค่ะ) and uses royal vocabulary for body parts, actions, and concepts in highly formal settings. In a Bangkok corporate interview, the interviewer uses formal register consistently. A deaf candidate whose visual vocabulary comes from everyday informal Thai may not recognise polite register forms.
Bangkok vs regional accents
- Standard Bangkok Thai differs from Northern, Northeastern, and Southern varieties
- Standard Thai (Bangkok) is the prestige interview variety, but interviewers from Chiang Mai (Northern), Khon Kaen (Northeastern/Isan), or Hat Yai (Southern) carry regional phonological influence. Isan speakers' Thai has Lao-influenced tones. Southern Thai has different initial consonants. A deaf candidate trained on Bangkok Thai faces different lip shapes from regional interviewers.

Overall, around 24% of Thais with disabilities above 15 report having employment, and only 8% are in competitive labour markets.
