Why Malay is hard to understand
Bahasa Rojak code-switching
- Malaysian interviews mix Malay and English mid-sentence unpredictably
- Malaysian professional speech — sometimes called Bahasa Rojak — mixes Bahasa Melayu and English within individual sentences at very high rates. In a Kuala Lumpur corporate interview, an interviewer may begin a question in Malay, use an English technical term, and complete it in Malay. The switch is determined by pragmatics and vocabulary availability, not by a predictable structure. A deaf candidate cannot anticipate which language the next phrase will be in.
Formal-colloquial register gap
- Bahasa Malaysia formal interview register differs substantially from everyday speech
- Formal Bahasa Malaysia (used in government agencies, official corporate settings, and formal interviews) uses literary vocabulary and more complex constructions than everyday colloquial Malay. 'Saya ingin bertanyakan tentang pengalaman kerja anda' is formal; everyday conversation would be much shorter. A deaf candidate whose visual vocabulary comes from daily Malaysian street Malay faces unfamiliar word forms in a formal interview.
Multi-ethnic phonological influence

- Malaysia's multiethnic composition means that Chinese-Malaysian, Indian-Malaysian, and indigenous interviewers bring phonological influence from Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, Tamil, and other community languages into their Bahasa Melayu. A deaf candidate trained on standard Malaysian Malay lip shapes may watch a Hokkien-influenced or Tamil-accented version of the same words.
Malay-Indonesian divergence
- Standard Malay differs from Indonesian in vocabulary and some phonological conventions
- Standard Malaysian Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) and Standard Indonesian differ in vocabulary, loanword patterns, and some pronunciations. A deaf candidate familiar with Indonesian Malay faces different words in a Malaysian interview — the same concept may use a different root word with different lip shapes.

Malaysia recorded 805,509 registered persons with disabilities in 2024, representing 2.4% of the national population. Of these, only 3,782 registered PwDs were employed — less than 0.8% of the registered disabled population. Only 0.3% of the public service workforce comprises PwDs as of 2022. UNDP Malaysia launched a project in 2023 to improve people with disabilities' access to employment and legal protection, explicitly acknowledging the gap between Malaysia's legal disability framework and employment outcomes on the ground.
Malaysia's Persons with Disabilities Act 2008 recognises seven disability types including hearing impairment. Research published in the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science examined hindrance factors for hiring PwDs in Malaysia from employers' perspectives, finding that communication barriers were among the primary reasons cited for not hiring deaf and hard of hearing candidates. The interview stage — where an employer first encounters a deaf candidate's communication in real time — is where this bias most commonly manifests.
The multilingual nature of Malaysian professional communication compounds the access gap.
