Why Gujarati is hard to understand
Retroflex-dental invisibility
- ટ/ઠ/ડ/ઢ look identical to ત/થ/દ/ધ on the lips
- Gujarati distinguishes retroflex consonants (ટ, ઠ, ડ, ઢ — produced with tongue curled to hard palate) from dental consonants (ત, થ, દ, ધ — tongue at teeth). Like other South Asian languages, both sets produce near-identical visible lip positions in natural interview speech. In an Ahmedabad or Surat office, an interviewer's retroflex consonants carry meaning that a deaf candidate watching their lips cannot distinguish.
Aspiration pairs
- Aspirated stops are acoustic — the same lip shape, different breath
- Gujarati contrasts aspirated and unaspirated stop pairs: પ/ફ, ટ/ઠ, ક/ખ, બ/ભ. The aspiration is a burst of breath, produced acoustically and invisible on the lips. In a formal Gujarati business interview in Ahmedabad's diamond industry or Surat's textile sector, these pairs appear constantly and cannot be distinguished by visual observation.
Trilingual code-switching
- Gujarati interviews in Gujarat mix Gujarati, Hindi, and English
- In Ahmedabad and Surat's business environments, Gujarati, Hindi, and English mix freely within the same interview conversation. Mumbai-based Gujarati speakers also switch into Marathi. A deaf candidate tracking any one language is watching the others invisibly, with no signal of the language shift on the lips.
Breathy voice in aspirates
- Gujarati aspirated stops have distinctive breathy quality that disappears on the lips
- Gujarati aspirated consonants are accompanied by breathy voice — a distinctive phonetic feature confirmed in acoustic studies. This breathy quality is entirely acoustic, occurring in the vocal folds behind the lips. In a formal interview, words with breathy-voice aspirated consonants look identical to words with plain consonants to a lip-reader.
Formal register gap

India has an estimated 63 million people with significant hearing loss, across all states including Gujarat — India's fifth-largest economy by GDP. Gujarat is a major centre for diamond trading, textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and ports, with large employers running structured verbal hiring processes. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act 2016 mandates a 4% employment quota in government jobs and reasonable accommodations for disabled workers. In practice, interview-stage captioning or sign language interpretation is not a standard offering at Gujarat's major private employers, and the quota is inconsistently enforced in the private sector.
Gujarat's corporate culture — dominated by business families with strong oral communication traditions in Gujarati, Hindi, and English — relies on fast verbal interaction in interviews. The structured panel interview format at major Ahmedabad and Surat companies does not include visual support as a default. Requesting accommodation in advance can introduce bias before a candidate's qualifications are evaluated, and not requesting it means navigating a fast multilingual interview without support.
The UNDP India analysis of disability inclusion in the private sector (2023) found that awareness of reasonable accommodation obligations among HR managers is low, particularly outside major IT and banking employers.
