Why Greek is hard to understand

- Greek is spoken at one of the highest speech rates among European languages. In clinical settings, a doctor delivering a diagnosis, dosage instructions, and follow-up directions in rapid Standard Modern Greek produces a stream where individual word boundaries compress and merge. Northern vowel deletion
- Northern Greek dialects drop unstressed vowels entirely
- A significant phonological feature of Northern Greek dialects (Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaloniki) is the deletion of unstressed high vowels /i/ and /u/ in certain environments. Stress invisibility
- Greek word stress shifts meaning but produces minimal visual change
- Greek is a stress-timed language where stress position is phonemically significant — 'γέρος' (old man) vs 'γερός' (healthy/strong). Stress changes are auditory, not visual. In Greece, approximately 25,000 people are deaf or use hearing aids, with a further 40,000 with residual hearing. Research on this community has found a striking statistic: 95.9% of deaf and hard of hearing adults in Greece hold an officially recognized disability certificate, suggesting a relatively high rate of formal recognition — yet this recognition has not translated into equitable healthcare access. A cross-sectional study published in the European Journal of Person Centered Healthcare found that a considerable percentage of deaf and hard of hearing respondents did not make appropriate use of healthcare services and experienced major difficulties during health visits, with quality of communication identified as the central barrier.
The structural problem identified by researchers is that people with hearing disabilities are systematically not included in Greek health policy and planning processes. The absence of assistive technology and the low availability of GSL interpreters are the primary barriers for those who communicate in sign language.
