Why Welsh is hard to understand
Lateral fricative ll
- The Welsh 'll' is produced inside the mouth with no lip movement
- Welsh 'll' is a voiceless lateral fricative — air flows around the sides of the tongue, deep inside the mouth. The lips barely change position. A lip-reader watching a Welsh speaker say 'llan', 'llaeth', or 'llyfr' sees almost no lip movement for a sound central to Welsh vocabulary.
Consonant mutations
- Initial consonants change in context — invisibly and unpredictably
- Welsh has an extensive system of initial consonant mutations: the first sound of a word changes depending on grammatical context — 'pen' (head) becomes 'ben', 'mhen', or 'phen' depending on what precedes it. A lip-reader expecting one consonant shape sees a completely different one, with no visual forewarning.
North-South dialect split
- Northern and southern Welsh differ substantially in vowels and vocabulary
- Northern Welsh (Gwynedd, Anglesey) and southern Welsh (Cardiff, Swansea, the Valleys) differ in vowel quality, vocabulary, and speech rate. The vowel 'u' is produced differently in north and south; many words used in the north are unrecognised in the south. A phone call from Caernarfon reads differently from one from Swansea.
Welsh-English code-switching
- English appears mid-sentence without pause or signal
- Almost all Welsh speakers are bilingual and code-switch between Welsh and English constantly mid-sentence. The switch carries no pause or visual marker, and since Welsh and English share some consonants, the transition is hard to detect visually. A lip-reader tracking Welsh consonant shapes is suddenly facing English phonology.
Vowel length
- Long and short vowels change Welsh word meaning invisibly
- Welsh distinguishes long and short vowels that carry different meanings. The lip position is the same for both; only the duration differs. On a phone call, this durational distinction is invisible to a lip-reader tracking Welsh speech.

Approximately 610,000 people in Wales are deaf or have hearing loss — part of the 12 million adults across the UK with hearing impairment. The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) projects that by 2035, 14.2 million UK adults will have hearing loss greater than 25 dB HL, reflecting demographic ageing. Hearing loss is the leading cause of years lived with disability for the over-60 population in the GBD 2019 study for the European region.
Wales presents a compound access barrier not present in other UK regions: Welsh-speaking deaf and hard of hearing people navigate a system where British Sign Language (BSL) is used by the UK deaf community, but Welsh-medium services and Welsh-language captioning are significantly less available than English equivalents. Welsh-medium healthcare, government, and public phone services are legally required under the Welsh Language Standards, but real-time captioning for Welsh-language calls is not routinely provided. For deaf and hard of hearing Welsh speakers, this means that using Welsh on the phone — with a GP, a council, or family — is more inaccessible than using English.
