Why Finnish is hard to understand
Vowel length
- Short and long vowels carry different meanings with the same lip shape
- Finnish distinguishes short and long vowels that change word meaning entirely — 'tuli' (fire), 'tuuli' (wind), 'tulli' (customs). On the lips, the mouth holds the same position; only the duration differs. On a phone call, this distinction is purely auditory.
Geminate consonants
- Doubled consonants mark meaning with no visible lip change
- Finnish uses geminate (doubled) consonants to distinguish words — 'tapan' (I kill) vs 'tappan' (I kill repeatedly), 'kato' (crop failure) vs 'katto' (roof). The lip closure for a /p/ or /t/ is the same whether it is single or doubled; only the hold duration differs.
Agglutinative suffix chains
- Multiple suffixes compress into long unbroken runs
- Finnish stacks case suffixes, possessive suffixes, and clitics onto a single stem — 'talossanikin' means 'in my house too' in one word. In fast speech these suffix chains compress into long runs with no visible word boundary, making it hard to segment what is being said.
Vowel harmony
- Suffix vowels shift based on the stem — invisibly
- Finnish divides vowels into front and back sets, and suffixes must harmonise with the stem. In fast speech the fine distinction between front and back vowels collapses, shifting the expected lip shape and making suffix boundaries ambiguous.
Finland-Swedish code-switching
- Swedish appears in bilingual regions without warning
- In Helsinki and along the Swedish-speaking coastal regions, Finnish speakers move between Finnish and Swedish mid-sentence. The phonological shift is seamless and the two languages share similar consonant inventory, making the switch hard to detect visually.

Finland has approximately 750,000 people with some degree of hearing loss out of a population of 5.5 million — applying the Global Burden of Disease 2019 prevalence rates for the European region. Finnish Sign Language (FinSL) is one of the few sign languages protected by a national constitution: it was written into Finland's Constitution Act in 1995, giving it formal recognition decades before most European countries. A population-based cross-sectional study on Finnish older adults (PMC5100231) found that hearing loss was significantly associated with reduced use of preventive health services, a pattern that points to systematic underuse of healthcare among those who cannot follow phone-based communications.
Despite strong policy, a gap persists between legal recognition and practical access. A Finnish register study covering all residents aged 60–99 from 2009 to 2019 (Oxford Academic, Age and Ageing) found that hearing loss substantially raises lifetime risk of comorbid disability — compounding the social isolation that phone and video call inaccessibility creates. Hearing aid uptake in Finland remains incomplete, and even for aided users, calls from unfamiliar speakers, speakers with regional dialects, or calls involving Finnish-Swedish code-switching remain difficult to follow.
