Why Gujarati is hard to understand
South Asian stop invisibility
- Eight distinct stops produce near-identical lip shapes
- Research on Indian-language lip-reading identifies dental and retroflex stops as the hardest phonemes to decipher visually. Gujarati has a full four-series stop system at both dental and retroflex positions — eight distinct phonemes from four near-identical lip closures. On a video call, a deaf caller loses almost the entire consonant contrast system at once.
Breathy-voice distinction
- Murmured consonants carry meaning but leave no visible trace
- Gujarati phonemically contrasts modal and breathy-voiced (murmured) consonants — /b/ versus /bh/, /d/ versus /dh/. The breathiness is audible but produces no visible lip difference. On a phone or video call, a deaf caller cannot distinguish modal from murmured consonants — yet the distinction changes the word.
Saurashtra dialect speed
- Kathiawadi Gujarati runs faster than standard Ahmedabad
- The Saurashtra (Kathiawadi) dialect — spoken in Rajkot, Jamnagar, and across the Kathiawar peninsula — is characteristically faster and uses different vowel realizations than Standard Ahmedabad Gujarati. A family video call from Rajkot arrives with a different phonological shape than one from Surat or Vadodara.
Back-of-throat consonants
- Velar and uvular variants produce no labial movement
- Gujarati loans from Persian and Arabic retain uvular sounds in some dialects, and velar stops in fast speech often retract toward the back of the throat. These articulations generate no lip movement at all. On a video call, a deaf caller sees nothing while the phonemically distinctive sound happens invisibly.
Schwa deletion
- Fast speech removes the vowels that separate syllables
- Like other Indic languages, spoken Gujarati deletes the inherent schwa in unstressed syllables in fast casual speech. A three-syllable word becomes two on a phone call. A deaf caller whose lipreading model is built on careful reading-aloud encounters word shapes that no longer match.

Approximately 63 million people in India live with significant auditory impairment — 6.3% of the national population — making India home to one of the world's largest hearing-impaired populations in absolute terms. Hearing disability is the second most common cause of disability in India and the leading cause of sensory deficit. Community-based studies report hearing loss prevalence between 6% and 26.9% depending on age and geography, with rural areas and older populations bearing a substantially higher burden. The number of persons with hearing disability per 100,000 is 310 in rural India versus 236 in urban areas — a gap that affects Gujarati-speaking communities, where significant populations remain in rural and semi-urban areas of Gujarat.
India's National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness aims to reduce the prevalence and impact of hearing disability through early detection and intervention. However, implementation has been uneven across states, and Gujarat — despite being among India's more economically developed states — shows the same rural-urban service gap seen nationally. Audiological services, hearing aids, and trained audiologists are concentrated in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara, while district-level access remains limited. For Gujarati-speaking deaf and hard-of-hearing adults, the consequence is reliance on family members to facilitate medical appointments, government calls, and banking interactions.
