Why Punjabi is hard to understand
Tonal invisibility
- Punjabi's three lexical tones are entirely pitch-encoded
- Unlike most Indic languages, Punjabi is tonal — three lexical tones (level, rising, falling) distinguish otherwise identical words. On a phone or video call, two words that differ only in tone produce the same lip shape. The meaning lives entirely in pitch that a deaf caller cannot hear and cannot see.
Aspirated stop collapse
- Four-series stops produce near-identical lip shapes
- Punjabi's phonological system contrasts unaspirated, aspirated, voiced, and breathy-voiced stops across dental and retroflex positions. On a video call, /p/, /ph/, and /b/ are near-identical lip closures. A deaf family member watching the screen loses three out of four phonemic distinctions simultaneously.
Punjab-Punjab dialect gap
- Indian and Pakistani Punjabi sound perceptibly different
- Indian Punjabi (Majhi, Doabi, Malwai dialects) and Pakistani Punjabi differ in vowel quality, prosody, and vocabulary. A video call connecting Amritsar and Lahore involves speech patterns that the deaf caller from one side has built no schema for — even though the language is nominally the same.
Code-switching density
- Punjabi mixes with Hindi, Urdu, and English mid-sentence

- Punjabi's retroflex consonants are produced with the tongue curled back, generating minimal visible lip movement. On a video call they look identical to their dental counterparts. A deaf caller cannot distinguish between dental and retroflex consonants from the screen alone.

In the Punjab region of Pakistan, approximately 144,000 individuals are registered as deaf — but that figure substantially underestimates the true burden. Research on rural Pakistan has found hearing impairment prevalence of 7.9% among school-age children, and the estimated rate of profound bilateral hearing loss is 1.6 per 1,000 nationally, with 70% of cases arising in consanguineous families. Punjab is Pakistan's most populous province and has consanguinity rates as high as 80% in some communities — making hearing loss disproportionately prevalent there. In India, approximately 63 million people live with significant hearing impairment, representing 6.3% of the national population, and hearing disability ranks as the second most common cause of disability overall.
WHO and regional health authorities have documented that hearing impairment falls heaviest on children and families with limited healthcare access. In Pakistan, families of children with hearing loss report significant social and educational disruption — delays in diagnosis, limited access to audiology services outside major cities, and scarce interpreter provision for deaf adults in professional and medical settings. Across the border in India's Punjab, rural communities face similar gaps: the number of persons with hearing disability per 100,000 is higher in rural areas than urban ones, and services are concentrated in cities.
