Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

👨‍👩‍👧Calls with family and friends

A call with parents in Debrecen or grandparents in a village in the Great Hungarian Plain — who speak fast and assume you caught everything they said. Captio AI captions each word as they speak so you follow the whole call.

💼Work calls and conference calls

A work call with Budapest colleagues on Teams or a client video call in formal Hungarian. Put the call on speaker, point Captio AI toward the audio, and follow every agenda item without losing the thread to suffix chains or geminate pairs.

🏥Medical and healthcare calls

A callback from a háziorvos (GP) or the NEAK (National Health Insurance Fund) about a referral — formal medical Hungarian spoken quickly. Captio AI captions every instruction and appointment detail so nothing is missed.

🏦Banks, utilities, and customer service

A call from OTP Bank, K&H, or a Hungarian utility provider — automated menus in Hungarian, fast-speaking agents, and account information. Captio AI captions whatever comes through the speaker.

🌍International calls

A call from Hungarian diaspora family in Germany, Austria, Romania, or Slovakia — often mixing Hungarian with the local language naturally. Live Translator handles any language transitions so distance is not a barrier.

📹Video calls — FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom

A video call on Viber, WhatsApp, or Teams — the standard tools for Hungarian family catch-ups and remote work. Captio AI listens through the speaker and captions in real time alongside the video feed.

Why Captio AI

Built for the calls you have been avoiding

Captions as they speak

Words appear on screen word by word while the other person is still talking. You read what they say at the same pace everyone else hears it — no delay, no reconstruction.

Works on any call app

Captio AI does not need to integrate with any platform. Put the call on speaker, point the microphone toward the audio, and read the captions. It works the same way for any app on any device.

No more asking for repeats

Every word is on screen as it is said. If you missed something, glance at the caption rather than interrupting the call — the full sentence is there.

Handles call audio accurately

Compressed phone audio is less clean than in-person speech. Captio AI is built for real-world audio conditions, including the reduced quality of standard phone and VoIP calls.

Any language

For calls with family abroad, international colleagues, or foreign-language customer service. Live Translator captions and translates in real time with no manual setup.

Record and review after

Record any call and upload it to Audio Transcription. Get a full written record of everything said — useful for medical instructions, work decisions, and anything worth having in writing.

Hungarian

Why Hungarian is hard to understand

Vowel quantity pairs

  • Fourteen vowels in short-long pairs look identical on the lips
  • Hungarian distinguishes 14 vowels, each existing in a short/long pair: a/á, e/é, i/í, o/ó, ö/ő, u/ú, ü/ű. The long vowels not only differ in duration from their short counterparts — they often differ in quality too (á /aː/ vs a /ɔ/). On a phone call with compressed audio, the duration cue narrows; for a hard of hearing caller, minimal pairs like 'hal' (fish) and 'hál' (he sleeps) become indistinguishable.

Geminate consonants

  • Doubled consonants signal meaning but leave no visual trace
  • Hungarian uses geminate (doubled) consonants as a productive meaning distinction — 'hal' (fish) vs 'hall' (hears); 'kel' (he gets up) vs 'kell' (it is needed). The difference is purely one of consonant duration, which is encoded acoustically but invisible on the lips and easily lost on compressed call audio. A hard of hearing person cannot recover geminates without clear audio.

Palatal stops

  • Ty and gy are palatals invisible in the mouth
  • Hungarian has two palatal stops — ty /c/ and gy /ɟ/ — that are distinct phonemes but visually identical to /t/ and /d/ on the lips. These sounds are produced by raising the tongue body against the hard palate, far behind the teeth, leaving no visual trace. Words like 'tyúk' (hen) and 'tűk' (needles) or 'gyár' (factory) and 'jár' (goes) differ acoustically but are impossible to lip-read apart.

Vowel harmony reduction

  • Three-class vowel harmony collapses in fast speech
  • Hungarian vowels are divided into front unrounded, front rounded, and back classes that govern suffix choice across the entire word. In fast conversational Hungarian — the register typical of phone calls with family or familiar colleagues — harmonic distinctions reduce as unstressed suffix vowels blur toward a neutral position, stripping away the grammatical scaffold a hard of hearing person might use to parse word structure.

Agglutinative compression

  • Long suffix chains blur together at conversational speed
  • Hungarian is highly agglutinative — a single word can carry case, possession, number, and verbal aspect as stacked suffixes: 'barátomékéit' (those belonging to people at my friend's place). In fast phone conversation, these chains compress. A hard of hearing caller who misses one suffix boundary loses the grammatical thread for the rest of the word.

The Challenge

Hundreds of thousands of Hungarians navigate daily communication with hearing loss

Applying the GBD 2019 global prevalence rate for disabling hearing loss — approximately 5 percent of the population — to Hungary's 10 million residents points to roughly 500,000 people with significant hearing difficulty. Hungary ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2007 and legally recognised Hungarian Sign Language (Magyar jelnyelv) in 2009 under Act CXXV. These steps created a legal framework, but the gap between recognition and daily access to sign language interpretation in healthcare, government services, and employment settings remains substantial.

EFHOH (European Federation of Hard of Hearing People) estimates that approximately one in six Europeans — around 17 percent of the population — has some degree of hearing loss. For Hungarians with hearing difficulty, phone-based communication with state services, healthcare, and banking continues to be the primary channel despite the known barriers it presents. Healthcare callbacks from the national system, insurance correspondence, and municipal service notifications arrive almost exclusively by phone, and the provision of relay services or captioning alternatives remains limited compared to Western European countries.

Captio AI captions every Hungarian phone call in real time — so whether it is a callback from a Budapest clinic, a call from family in Debrecen, or a work call in fast suffix-heavy Hungarian, the words appear on screen as they are spoken.
