Why Croatian is hard to understand
Three dialect groups
- Štokavian, Čakavian, and Kajkavian sound like different languages
- Standard Croatian is Štokavian, but Čakavian dialects (Dalmatian coast and islands) and Kajkavian (Zagreb region and Zagorje) remain in everyday use. A phone call from Split and one from Zagreb sound substantially different. A lip-reader calibrated to standard Zagreb Croatian is disadvantaged on calls from the Dalmatian coast.
Pitch accent
- Four tones distinguish Croatian words with no visible lip change
- Croatian has a pitch-accent system with four types: short rising, short falling, long rising, and long falling. These tone patterns distinguish word meanings but are entirely auditory — no lip movement corresponds to pitch, making the distinctions invisible to a lip-reader.
Č/Ć and dž/đ pairs
- Hard and soft palatal pairs share identical lip shapes
- Croatian distinguishes hard post-alveolars (č, dž) from soft palatals (ć, đ) by tongue position alone. The lip shapes are identical. On a video call, 'čaša' (glass) and words with 'ć' look the same on the lips.
Consonant cluster density
- Complex onset clusters with minimal lip differentiation
- Croatian tolerates dense consonant clusters — 'čvršći' (firmer) has five consonants in sequence, 'štrukli' (a pastry) begins with /ʃtr/. These runs move quickly through articulatory positions that share similar lip shapes, offering little visual differentiation.
Dalmatian Italian code-switching
- Italian appears in coastal and island calls
- On the Dalmatian coast and islands, Croatian-Italian code-switching is common due to historical Italian presence and active Italian tourism. Diaspora calls from Italy also mix Croatian with Italian mid-sentence, shifting the phonological system with no visual warning.

In Croatia's 2011 census, 13,230 people were recorded with hearing impairment, of whom 2,763 had total or major disability. The Croatian Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was founded in 1921 and today comprises approximately 9,000 members across 23 regional organisations — one of the longest-established deaf community institutions in Southeast Europe. Croatian Sign Language (HZJ) was legally recognised in 1997 under the Croatian Sign Language Act, providing a formal framework for interpreter access and education.
In practice, interpreter availability remains limited outside Zagreb and major cities, and state-supported hearing aid rehabilitation requires a threshold of at least 40 dB hearing loss in the better ear — leaving those with mild to moderate loss without subsidised support. A 2024 self-assessment study using the Croatian version of the Hearing Handicap Inventory (PMC12452682) found significant rates of social and emotional handicap among Croatian adults with hearing loss, particularly in situations involving unfamiliar speakers or rapid speech — exactly the conditions of most phone calls.
