Why Belarusian is hard to understand
Akanye (vowel reduction)
- Unstressed vowels shift in ways the written form doesn't predict
- Belarusian has strong akanye — unstressed /o/ becomes /a/ in speech. Whole word categories change their vowel quality in running speech, so lip shapes don't match the written form a lip-reader might expect from seeing a word in text.
Trasianka code-mixing
- Russian and Belarusian merge unpredictably mid-sentence
- Trasianka is a fluid Russian-Belarusian mixture pervasive in Belarusian everyday speech. It has no fixed grammatical rules and shifts mid-sentence without signal. A lip-reader cannot anticipate which language's phonology they are tracking at any point in a call.
Palatalization
- Soft consonant pairs differ in tongue position only
- Belarusian distinguishes hard and soft consonant pairs — the difference is made by raising the tongue toward the palate. Lip shapes are identical for hard and soft versions of the same consonant, making the distinction entirely invisible to a lip-reader.
Yotation
- A /j/ glide inserted after soft consonants
- Belarusian inserts a /j/ glide before certain vowels after soft consonants — a process called yotation. The glide is brief, made at the front of the mouth, and produces minimal visible lip movement, making it essentially undetectable in lip-reading at normal speech speed.
Regional dialect variation
- Southwest, Northwest, and Central dialects shift the same words
- Southwest Belarusian blends with Ukrainian features; Northwest dialects carry Baltic substrate influences. A phone call from Brest sounds different from one from Vitebsk. A lip-reader calibrated to Central Belarusian is disadvantaged on calls from the dialect periphery.

Belarus has a population of 9.4 million. Applying the Global Burden of Disease 2019 prevalence rates for the Eastern European region gives an estimated 1.9 million Belarusians with some degree of hearing loss, of whom roughly 450,000 live with disabling hearing loss. The Belarusian Society of the Deaf (BelTIZ) exists as a state-supervised organisation, but Belarusian Sign Language has no legal recognition in national law — meaning deaf Belarusians have no guaranteed right to interpreter services in healthcare, legal proceedings, or government interactions.
Belarus ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2016, but practical implementation is constrained by the political environment, which limits independent disability rights advocacy. The WHO's Epidemiology of Deafness study notes that in Central and Eastern European countries without legally recognised sign languages, deaf populations face compounded exclusion: the absence of interpreters means that phone and video-based services — banking, healthcare, social support — are functionally inaccessible without a hearing intermediary.
