Why Polish is hard to understand
Consonant cluster density
- Polish clusters compress to a single visible burst in fast speech
- Polish is among the world's most cluster-heavy languages — sequences like szcz-, strz-, and zdz- appear at syllable boundaries. In a fast phone call, these multi-consonant clusters compress into rapid bursts where only the final phoneme remains clearly visible on the lips. A deaf caller reads one sound where three were spoken.
Nasal vowel invisibility
- Polish nasal vowels carry meaning in the voice, not the mouth position
- Polish has two phonemic nasal vowels — e-nasal and a-nasal — a feature rare in Slavic languages. Their nasal quality is carried in vocal resonance, not in lip or jaw position. On a video call, two words distinguished only by nasality look identical on screen. The grammatical distinction between them dissolves.
Final devoicing
- Written consonants at word-end are pronounced differently
- Polish systematically devoices word-final obstruents: the written 'b' in 'chleb' (bread) is pronounced as 'p', the 'z' in 'noz' as 's'. A deaf caller building a lipreading model from written Polish reads the voiced letter and expects one lip shape — but the speaker's lips are making a different one. This mismatch compounds across a conversation.
Palatalization
- Consonants before front vowels shift to a different lip position
- Before front vowels, Polish consonants palatalize — /t/, /d/, /n/ shift to softer versions. On a video call, these produce small but meaningful changes in lip rounding that are easily missed at distance or low frame rate. A deaf caller sees 'a consonant before a vowel' but cannot tell which version of the consonant was used.
Regional accent gap
- Silesian, Kashubian-influenced, and eastern Polish differ from Warsaw standard
- Silesian Polish, speech influenced by Kashubian, and the eastern borderland accent differ markedly from Standard Warsaw pronunciation in rhythm, vowel quality, and consonant treatment. A family video call connecting Warsaw and Wroclaw — or Warsaw and Bialystok — can involve perceptibly different phonological patterns.

In Poland, newborn hearing screening programmes have identified hearing impairment in 2.97 per 1,000 children — divided between sensorineural, conductive, and mixed cases — across studies involving more than 3.5 million births. Among first-grade schoolchildren in rural areas of the Malopolskie voivodeship, an 11.6% prevalence of hearing loss was recorded. These figures reflect a population where hearing impairment is widely distributed, and where the phonological complexity of Polish — dense consonant clusters, nasal vowels, and systematic final devoicing — makes every spoken interaction a layered challenge for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
Poland has a national newborn hearing screening programme and hearing aids are subsidised through the public health system, with patients today seeking aids at earlier stages of hearing loss than 25 years ago. However, Polish Sign Language (PJM) was formally recognised as a natural language only in 2017. Interpreter provision outside major cities remains limited, and deaf adults in rural areas or smaller towns face significant barriers in healthcare, government, and professional settings where PJM interpretation is simply not available.
