Why Indonesian is hard to understand

- Every Indonesian carries their regional language into their phone voice
- Bahasa Indonesia is spoken as a second language by most of its 270 million speakers. Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, Minangkabau, Batak, and Betawi speakers each carry distinct phonological patterns into Indonesian. On a phone call, accent substrates determine phoneme realisations — and phone compression strips the visual context that would help a deaf caller anchor the unfamiliar variety.
Javanese intonation
- Javanese-accented Indonesian has unexpected phrasal boundaries
- Javanese has a different intonation system with relatively flat pitch and different phrasal boundary cues compared to Jakarta Indonesian. Javanese-accented Indonesian — the most common substrate — has unexpected rhythmic patterns for a deaf listener calibrated to broadcast or formal Indonesian.
Regional vowel shifts
- Different regions shift vowel qualities in Indonesian
- Betawi Indonesian raises the /e/ vowel distinctively. Sundanese-accented speakers realise vowels differently from Javanese. These vowel shifts are entirely acoustic and non-visual — on a phone call, the gap between expected and actual vowel quality creates persistent ambiguity for a hard of hearing listener.
Informal Jabodetabek register
- Jakarta informal Indonesian is heavily elliptical at pace
- Informal Jabodetabek (Greater Jakarta) Indonesian drops pronouns, omits verb prefixes, and severely shortens common words: 'sudah' → 'udah', 'tidak' → 'gak', 'apa' → 'pa'. On a phone call, this register is the norm for family and friend calls, sounding nothing like formal Indonesian of news or classroom contexts.
Code-mixing with regional languages
- Phone calls freely switch to Javanese, Sundanese, or Betawi mid-sentence
- Indonesian speakers regularly insert words from their regional L1 into phone calls without signalling the switch. A Javanese family call may include Javanese discourse markers and terms of address mid-conversation. For a deaf caller expecting standard Bahasa, these switches are unexpected acoustic patterns.

Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) found in 2015 that almost nine million Indonesians over the age of 10 had difficulty hearing. By 2020, the agency estimated more than 22 million people with disabilities across the country — approximately 5% of the total population. A study published in PMC examining hearing problems in Indonesian adults found that hearing difficulty is significantly associated with hypertension and ageing, and that the burden rises sharply in urban populations over 50.
