Why Bengali is hard to understand
Aspiration contrast
- Bengali's aspirated stops vanish on a compressed call
- Bengali has four series of stop consonants — voiced and unvoiced, each in aspirated and unaspirated forms. Aspiration is entirely acoustic and invisible on the lips. Phone compression partially masks aspiration differences, collapsing minimal pairs like /p/ vs /pʰ/ into near-identical signals for a hard of hearing caller.
Dhaka-Kolkata-Chittagong gap
- Bengali across Bangladesh and West Bengal sounds like different languages
- Standard West Bengali (Kolkata) and Standard Bangladeshi (Dhaka) have distinct vowel systems and lexicons. Chittagong Bengali (চাটগাঁইয়া) differs so radically it is sometimes considered a separate language. A phone call from Chittagong is barely mutually intelligible for a deaf caller calibrated to Kolkata speech — and compressed audio makes the gap wider.
Nasalized vowels
- Nasalized vowels contrast with oral vowels but not visually
- Bengali has phonemic nasalized vowels that contrast meaningfully with oral vowels in minimal pairs. Nasalization is acoustic and non-visual. Phone compression reduces nasal quality, making these contrasts harder to distinguish even for listeners with significant residual hearing.
Fast connected speech
- Casual Bengali blurs word boundaries at pace
- Informal Bengali — especially in fast family calls — drops syllables, contracts words, and blurs boundaries. 'Ki bolcho' (what are you saying) runs together continuously at natural speed. On a phone call, this rate is layered on top of audio compression, making word parsing very difficult without captions.
Code-switching
- Urban Bengali freely mixes English and Hindi mid-sentence
- Bengali in Kolkata and Dhaka regularly switches to English and Hindi words mid-sentence, especially in work calls: 'meeting-e ashish', 'call diye bolo', 'hospital-e jabo'. The shift between phonological systems mid-sentence creates unexpected sound patterns on an already compressed call.

A study published in PMC estimated that 9.6% of Bangladesh's population — approximately 13.7 million people based on 2011 census figures — have hearing loss of 40 dB or greater. Profound hearing loss of 90 dB or more affects 1.2% of the population, approximately 1.7 million people. The 2021 National Survey on Persons with Disabilities found hearing disability accounts for 0.36% of formally registered disability, though researchers note this reflects registration gaps rather than true prevalence. For a deaf or hard of hearing patient in rural Bangladesh, missing that call means missing care. Hearing aid penetration in South Asia covers less than 5% of need.
