Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.
A call with parents in Athens or grandparents on a Greek island — who speak fast and assume you heard everything. Captio AI captions each word as they speak so you follow the whole conversation without asking them to repeat.
A work call with colleagues in Athens or Thessaloniki, where northern Greek vowel patterns differ from the Athenian standard. Put the call on speaker, point Captio AI toward the audio, and follow every discussion without losing the thread.
A callback from your giatros (doctor) or from the EOPYY (national health fund) about a referral or appointment. High-stakes medical Greek spoken quickly — Captio AI captions every instruction so nothing is missed.
A call from the National Bank of Greece, Alpha Bank, or the DEH (electricity authority) — automated menus in Greek and fast-speaking agents. Captio AI captions whatever comes through the speaker.
A call from Greek diaspora family in Australia, Germany, or the United States, often switching between Greek and the local language mid-sentence. Live Translator handles both languages in the same call.
A video call on Viber or WhatsApp — the dominant channels for Greek families across the country and diaspora. Captio AI listens through the speaker and captions in real time alongside the video feed.

Built for the calls you have been avoiding
Captions as they speak
Words appear on screen word by word while the other person is still talking. You read what they say at the same pace everyone else hears it — no delay, no reconstruction.
Works on any call app
Captio AI does not need to integrate with any platform. Put the call on speaker, point the microphone toward the audio, and read the captions. It works the same way for any app on any device.
No more asking for repeats
Every word is on screen as it is said. If you missed something, glance at the caption rather than interrupting the call — the full sentence is there.
Handles call audio accurately
Compressed phone audio is less clean than in-person speech. Captio AI is built for real-world audio conditions, including the reduced quality of standard phone and VoIP calls.
Any language
For calls with family abroad, international colleagues, or foreign-language customer service. Live Translator captions and translates in real time with no manual setup.
Record and review after
Record any call and upload it to Audio Transcription. Get a full written record of everything said — useful for medical instructions, work decisions, and anything worth having in writing.
Why Greek is hard to understand
Voiced fricative density
- Greek fricatives cluster where lips show nothing
- Modern Greek has a high density of voiced and voiceless fricatives: /v/, /f/, /ð/ (voiced th), /θ/ (voiceless th), /x/ (velar fricative), /ɣ/ (voiced velar fricative). The velars /x/ and /ɣ/ — common in Greek words — are produced entirely at the back of the mouth with no visible lip configuration. On a phone call with compressed audio, these sounds blur into each other and the lips give no additional cue.
Cypriot Greek
- Cypriot Greek retains phonological features that Standard Greek dropped
- Cypriot Greek is a distinct dialect with significant phonological differences from Standard Modern Greek: it retains geminate consonants (where Standard Greek lost them), has distinct vowel system properties, and uses vocabulary and phonological patterns absent from Athenian Greek. A call from Nicosia sounds strikingly different from a call from Athens — even for Greek hearing speakers, it requires adjustment.
Rapid cluster compression
- Greek clusters like /str/, /ks/, /ps/ compress in fast speech
- Greek has inherited consonant clusters from Ancient Greek — /str/, /ks/ (ξ), /ps/ (ψ), /mn/, /gn/ — that retain their status in formal speech but compress in fast casual conversation. In a phone call between friends or family, these clusters reduce significantly, leaving a hard of hearing caller with less phonological information than the written form would suggest.
Thessaloniki-Athens divide
- Northern Greek dialects have distinct vowel and consonant patterns
- Northern Greek dialects (Macedonia, Thrace) underwent a process called 'raising' — mid front vowels /e/ and /o/ raised and devoiced in unstressed position, producing a sound pattern very different from Standard Athenian Greek. A caller from Thessaloniki sounds different from one from Athens, with vowels that disappear entirely in unstressed syllables.
Diaspora code-switching
- Greek-Australian, Greek-German, and Greek-American callers mix languages
- Greek diaspora communities in Australia, Germany, and the United States mix Greek with the local language naturally in phone calls. A call from a relative in Melbourne may switch between Greek and English mid-sentence; one from Germany mixes Greek and German. For a hard of hearing person already working to follow Greek, the unpredictable language shift adds an additional layer of processing.

Research published in Archives of Public Health found that 93 percent of deaf adults and 77.8 percent of hard of hearing adults in Greece reported struggling to navigate the healthcare system and encountered significant barriers in accessing health services. These barriers included difficulty booking appointments, lack of administrative alternatives such as email booking, long waiting times, and limited free sign language interpretation hours. People with hearing disabilities in Greece are systematically not included in health policy and planning processes — a gap that affects their ability to access the same standard of care as hearing patients.
A parallel study on health service barriers among deaf and hard of hearing adults in Greece found that unmet needs were widespread: without trained interpreters and adequate communication support, many deaf and hard of hearing Greeks are unable to access medical information, follow healthcare instructions, or advocate for themselves in clinical settings. Greece's sign language interpreting provision outside major cities is sparse, leaving large portions of the deaf community in islands and rural regions without any professional communication support for medical calls.
Captio AI captions every Greek phone call in real time — so whether it is a callback from a clinic in Athens, a call from family in Thessaloniki, or a video call with diaspora relatives in Melbourne, the words appear on screen as they are spoken.

People love Captio AI
"EOPYY called about my referral in fast formal Greek. I caught the specialist name and nothing else. With Captio AI I read the whole callback — department, date, what to bring. No more calling back to ask what I missed."
"Northern Greek vowels disappear in unstressed syllables — Thessaloniki Greek sounds very different from Athens. Captio AI handles both without me having to change any setting. I follow family calls from the village and work calls from our Athens office."
"I call my yiayia in Crete and she mixes Greek and some old dialect words. I grew up with Australian English and my Greek comprehension is not what it was. Captio AI captions everything and fills the gap between what I hear and what I need to understand."
"Cypriot Greek sounds completely different from what Athenian Greeks speak — the geminates, the vowels, the whole rhythm. Most tools fail on Cypriot. Captio AI gets it right often enough that I now use it for every call from the mainland relatives who expect me to follow their version."
