Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

👨‍👩‍👧Calls with family and friends

A call home to family in A Coruña, Vigo, or Santiago de Compostela — catching up in Galician at the pace of a family phone call.

💼Work calls and conference calls

A work call with Galician colleagues or clients — professional Galician or the Galician-Spanish mixture used across the region's businesses.

🏥Medical and healthcare calls

A callback from a centro de saúde (health centre) in Galicia or a farmacia — healthcare calls where every word about a result or a prescription matters.

🏦Banks, utilities, and customer service

A call from a Galician bank, Fenosa/E-Redes, or a local government service line — automated menus in Galician or Spanish, followed by an agent at full speed.

🌍International calls

A call from a Galician relative in Switzerland, Germany, or Argentina, mixing Galician with German or Spanish mid-sentence.

📹Video calls — FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom

A WhatsApp or FaceTime video call with Galician family — the standard platform for Galicians in the diaspora staying connected with A Coruña or Lugo.

Why Captio AI

Built for the calls you have been avoiding

Captions as they speak

Words appear on screen word by word while the other person is still talking. You read what they say at the same pace everyone else hears it — no delay, no reconstruction.

Works on any call app

Captio AI does not need to integrate with any platform. Put the call on speaker, point the microphone toward the audio, and read the captions. It works the same way for any app on any device.

No more asking for repeats

Every word is on screen as it is said. If you missed something, glance at the caption rather than interrupting the call — the full sentence is there.

Handles call audio accurately

Compressed phone audio is less clean than in-person speech. Captio AI is built for real-world audio conditions, including the reduced quality of standard phone and VoIP calls.

Any language

For calls with family abroad, international colleagues, or foreign-language customer service. Live Translator captions and translates in real time with no manual setup.

Record and review after

Record any call and upload it to Audio Transcription. Get a full written record of everything said — useful for medical instructions, work decisions, and anything worth having in writing.

Galician

Why Galician is hard to understand

Gheada

  • The Galician 'g' becomes a fricative in western dialects
  • In western Galicia, the voiced stop /g/ is replaced by a fricative /h/ or /x/ — a feature called gheada. 'Gato' sounds like 'hato' or 'xato'. A lip-reader watching what looks like a 'g' onset hears a fricative sound produced at the back of the throat with no visible difference.

Seseo variation

  • Coastal dialects merge /s/ and /θ/ behind the teeth
  • Some coastal and eastern Galician dialects show seseo — merging the sounds /s/ and /θ/ into a single sibilant. All sibilants are produced behind the upper teeth with similar lip shapes regardless; the merger adds a layer of ambiguity for a lip-reader trying to identify which sound they are seeing.

Eastern-Western dialect split

  • Ferrol and Ourense read differently on the lips
  • Eastern Galician (closer to Asturian and Castilian) and western coastal Galician differ in vowel quality, rhythm, and features like gheada and seseo. A phone call from Ferrol and one from Ourense carry different articulatory patterns, disadvantaging a lip-reader calibrated to one variety.

Galician-Spanish code-switching

  • Castilian Spanish appears mid-sentence without warning
  • Most Galicians are bilingual and switch constantly between Galician and Castilian — a mixing pattern called 'castrapo' in informal speech. On a phone call, both phonological systems are active, with the switch carrying no pause or visual marker.

Nasal vowels

  • Some Galician dialects nasalise vowels with no visible lip change
  • Galician, unlike Castilian Spanish, has phonemic nasal vowels in certain dialect areas. Nasality is produced at the soft palate with no visible change in lip shape. A lip-reader watching a Galician speaker nasalise a vowel sees the same lip position as an oral vowel.

The Challenge

Hearing loss in Galicia and Spain: access gaps in a bilingual region

In Spain, the National Statistics Institute recorded 1,064,000 people who are deaf or have a hearing disability — 2.3% of the national population — with the EuroTrak survey placing the broader figure at five million Spaniards with some hearing loss. Galicia, with a population of 2.7 million and a relatively older demographic than the Spanish average, carries a disproportionate burden: hearing loss increases steeply with age, and Galicia has one of Spain's highest proportions of over-65 residents.

The Galician deaf community uses Spanish Sign Language (LSE) rather than a distinct Galician sign language — a situation that creates an additional cultural and linguistic gap for Galician-speaking deaf people, whose identity language is neither the sign language they use nor the Castilian that dominates national deaf services. Phone and video calls in Galician — with family, with health services, with local government — have no real-time captioning provision, and interpreter availability outside Santiago de Compostela and Vigo is limited.

Captio AI captions every Galician phone call in real time — from a family call from Ferrol to a centro de saúde callback in standard Galician — so deaf and hard of hearing users can follow every word independently.

Privacy

What you hear stays with you.

Gone the moment it ends

Captio AI processes your audio in real time and discards it immediately. Nothing is recorded. Nothing is kept.

Not a product

Your conversations are not something Captio AI sells, shares, or monetizes — to anyone, for any reason.

Not used to train anything

What you say in a doctor's appointment or a job interview never ends up in a training dataset. Not ours. Not anyone else's.
