Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

👨‍👩‍👧Calls with family and friends

A call home to family in Barcelona, Tarragona, or Lleida — catching up in Catalan at the pace of an everyday home phone call.

💼Work calls and conference calls

A work call with Catalan-speaking colleagues or clients — professional Catalan with industry vocabulary, possibly from an open-plan office in Barcelona.

🏥Medical and healthcare calls

A callback from a Catalan health centre (CAP), a hospital in Girona, or a pharmacy — healthcare calls where catching every detail about a result or a prescription matters.

🏦Banks, utilities, and customer service

A call from a Catalan bank, a utility company, or a local government line — automated Catalan menus followed by an agent speaking at full conversational speed.

🌍International calls

A call from Catalan diaspora in France, the UK, or Germany, mixing Catalan with French or English mid-conversation.

📹Video calls — FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom

A WhatsApp or FaceTime video call with Catalan family — the standard platform for Catalan families keeping in contact across the Spanish regions and the French border.

Why Captio AI

Built for the calls you have been avoiding

Captions as they speak

Words appear on screen word by word while the other person is still talking. You read what they say at the same pace everyone else hears it — no delay, no reconstruction.

Works on any call app

Captio AI does not need to integrate with any platform. Put the call on speaker, point the microphone toward the audio, and read the captions. It works the same way for any app on any device.

No more asking for repeats

Every word is on screen as it is said. If you missed something, glance at the caption rather than interrupting the call — the full sentence is there.

Handles call audio accurately

Compressed phone audio is less clean than in-person speech. Captio AI is built for real-world audio conditions, including the reduced quality of standard phone and VoIP calls.

Any language

For calls with family abroad, international colleagues, or foreign-language customer service. Live Translator captions and translates in real time with no manual setup.

Record and review after

Record any call and upload it to Audio Transcription. Get a full written record of everything said — useful for medical instructions, work decisions, and anything worth having in writing.

Catalan

Why Catalan is hard to understand

Vowel reduction

  • Unstressed vowels collapse to schwa with no distinct lip shape
  • In Eastern Catalan (including Barcelona), unstressed /a/ and /e/ both reduce to schwa /ə/. A word's stressed vowel may be visible on the lips, but all surrounding unstressed syllables collapse to the same neutral position. On a phone call, the lip landscape becomes much sparser than the written form suggests.

Eastern–Western dialect split

  • Central Catalan and Valencian have different vowel systems
  • Central Catalan (Barcelona) and Valencian (Valencia) differ substantially in vowel inventory — Valencian preserves vowel distinctions that Central Catalan reduces. Mallorcan Catalan has additional archaic features. A phone call from Palma sounds different from one from Lleida or Valencia.

Consonant cluster simplification

  • Final clusters simplify unpredictably in fast speech
  • Catalan tolerates complex final consonant clusters — /st/, /lt/, /mp/, /nt/ — that simplify in different ways in fast speech depending on the speaker and region. A lip-reader cannot predict which segment will be dropped, making word endings ambiguous.

Catalan–Spanish code-switching

  • Spanish enters mid-sentence, invisibly
  • Most Catalan speakers are bilingual in Spanish, and code-switching between Catalan and Spanish is constant and phonologically seamless. A lip-reader tracking Catalan vowel shapes is suddenly facing Spanish phonology — which has a different vowel inventory — with no visual marker indicating the switch.

French Catalan (Rossellonès)

  • Cross-border calls add French into the mix
  • In northern Catalonia (Roussillon, France), Catalan speakers have incorporated French phonology and vocabulary. On family calls across the French-Spanish border, a third phonological system — French — enters the call without warning.

The Challenge

Hearing loss in Catalonia and Spain: numbers, thresholds, and access gaps

In Spain, the National Statistics Institute (INE) recorded 1,064,000 people who are deaf or have some hearing disability — 2.3% of the national population. More recent EuroTrak survey data suggests around five million Spaniards, roughly one in ten, live with some degree of hearing loss. Spain's disability recognition threshold for hearing loss is notably high: a person must demonstrate approximately 68.6% hearing loss to qualify for the 33% disability recognition that unlocks public support — a threshold that excludes many people with substantial but below-threshold impairment.

Catalonia has two sign languages in active use: Spanish Sign Language (LSE) and Catalan Sign Language (LSC), which has its own distinct grammar and vocabulary and is officially recognised under Catalan regional law. Despite this recognition, interpreter availability outside Barcelona is limited, and Catalan-speaking deaf people in smaller towns — in the Pyrenees, in Lleida province, or in the Valencian Community — face the same phone access gap as deaf communities across Europe: no real-time captioning for calls to banks, healthcare, or utilities.

Captio AI captions every Catalan phone call in real time — from a Barcelona family call mixing Catalan and Spanish to a CAP healthcare callback in standard Catalan — so deaf and hard of hearing users can follow every word independently.

Privacy

What you hear stays with you.

Gone the moment it ends

Captio AI processes your audio in real time and discards it immediately. Nothing is recorded. Nothing is kept.

Not a product

Your conversations are not something Captio AI sells, shares, or monetizes — to anyone, for any reason.

Not used to train anything

What you say in a doctor's appointment or a job interview never ends up in a training dataset. Not ours. Not anyone else's.
