Why Marathi is hard to understand
Four-series stop collapse
- Aspiration contrast is entirely acoustic
- Marathi has four series of stop consonants: unaspirated, aspirated, voiced, and voiced aspirated (क/ख/ग/घ). The aspiration that distinguishes कापूस from खाप is entirely in the burst of air — lips make the same closure shape for all four. On a phone call without hearing, all four series collapse into one.
Schwa deletion in fast speech
- Words lose their middle vowels at speed
- Fast spoken Marathi drops the schwa from medial syllables: मला becomes m'la, सगळा becomes sg'ḷa. This vowel deletion changes the syllable count and rhythm of familiar words, making word boundaries harder to identify. A deaf caller tracking syllable shapes loses the anchor points when vowels disappear in rapid speech.
Regional variety gap
- Pune, Vidarbha, Konkan, and Mumbai Marathi sound different
- Pune, Nagpur (Vidarbha), Konkan, and Mumbai Marathi differ in vowel quality, prosodic rhythm, and vocabulary. A deaf caller familiar with Pune Marathi may not recognize the phonological shape of Vidarbha Marathi even though both are called Marathi. Regional variation is strongest in family and informal calls — exactly the calls that happen most often.
Retroflex invisibility
- Dental-retroflex pairs look identical on lips
- Marathi distinguishes dental and retroflex consonant series (त/ट, द/ड, न/ण, ल/ळ). The retroflex sounds are made with the tongue curled back against the palate — with no visible change at the lips. These contrasts are phonemically meaningful but completely invisible and available only in the acoustic signal.
Nasalized vowel density
- Marathi nasalization changes meaning but leaves no lip trace
- Marathi nasalized vowels (अं, आं, इं) are frequent in natural speech and distinguish words. They are produced by lowering the soft palate with no outward mouth change. On a phone call without hearing, the nasalization that differentiates pairs of words is entirely inaudible and invisible simultaneously.

India is home to approximately 63 million deaf and hard of hearing people — hearing disability is the second most common disability in the country. A 2022 analysis using National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) data found disabling hearing loss prevalence ranging from 4.5% to 18.3% in community-based studies, with rural Maharashtra recording higher rates than urban centres. Of hearing-disabled Indians of working age (15–59), 73.9% are classified as marginal workers according to 2011 census data, indicating that telephone-based systems — banking, government schemes, medical callbacks — represent a primary exclusion frontier.
India has no national telephone relay service accessible on mobile or VoIP platforms. Indian Sign Language (ISL) is used in deaf communities across Maharashtra, but interpreters remain scarce outside major cities.
