Why Captio AI

Built for the speed of a real meeting

Captions while they are still speaking

Words appear on screen as each person talks — not after they finish. You read what someone is saying at the same moment everyone else hears it.

Works in any meeting format

Conference rooms, open-plan offices, video calls, all-hands. Place the phone on the table or hold it — Captio AI handles the rest.

Handles fast speech and crosstalk

Captio AI is designed for real meetings, not controlled dictation. It follows whoever is speaking loudest at any moment, keeping up with the natural pace of discussion.

No setup, no explaining

Open the app and place the phone. No pairing, no telling colleagues what you are doing, no requesting anything from the meeting organiser.

Review everything after

Record the meeting and upload it to Audio Transcription for a full written record. Use AI Summary to extract decisions and action items so nothing from the meeting gets lost.

60+ languages

For international teams, multilingual meetings, or colleagues who switch between languages mid-discussion. No setup required — Captio AI detects and captions in real time.

Vietnamese

Why Vietnamese is hard to understand

Six-tone system

  • Vietnamese words differ only by tone — a distinction entirely invisible on the lips
  • Vietnamese distinguishes six tones — sắc, huyền, hỏi, ngã, nặng, and the flat tone. In a meeting, words that differ only in tone are entirely indistinguishable on the lips. Two colleagues debating 'ma' (ghost), 'má' (mother), and 'mà' (but) produce identical mouth shapes.

North–South tone merger

  • Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Vietnamese use different tonal systems for the same words
  • Northern Vietnamese preserves all six tones distinctly; Southern Vietnamese merges hỏi and ngã into a single tone. A Hà Nội speaker and a Hồ Chí Minh City speaker on the same call present different phonological systems — and the merged tones in Southern speech can change whether a word is heard correctly by a deaf participant familiar with Northern phonology.

Creaky and breathy voice tones

  • Two Vietnamese tones use voice quality distinctions that are purely acoustic and invisible
  • Two Vietnamese tones — ngã and nặng — are produced with creaky voice or a glottal stop ending. These phonation distinctions are purely acoustic and invisible at the lip level. For a deaf participant, two tones that sound distinct to a hearing colleague look completely identical.

Rapid syllable-timed rhythm

  • Vietnamese syllable-timed rhythm leaves almost no prosodic window for parsing meaning
  • Vietnamese is monosyllabic and syllable-timed. In fast meeting speech, syllables arrive at a uniform pace with no prosodic grouping to signal clause boundaries. A deaf participant has no rhythm cue to help parse when one idea ends and the next begins.

Vietnamese–English code-switching in tech

  • Ho Chi Minh City tech meetings demand two phonological systems running in parallel
  • Ho Chi Minh City's tech, startup, and multinational sectors run meetings that freely mix Vietnamese and English technical vocabulary. For a deaf participant, tracking which language is active at any point in a fast standup or sprint review doubles the cognitive load.

The Challenge

1.3 to 2.5 million Vietnamese with hearing loss — 87% in the informal sector, and most meetings still inaccessible.

National surveys indicate approximately 1.3 million people in Vietnam with significant hearing impairment, with broader estimates including mild impairment reaching 2.5 million. Employment among working-age Vietnamese with disabilities, including hearing loss, stands at approximately 44% — compared to the general working-age employment rate. Of those who are employed, 87% are concentrated in the informal sector: agriculture, small-scale vending, and handicrafts. Formal employment — the kind that involves meetings, professional development, and career progression — is largely inaccessible to Vietnam's deaf and hard of hearing population.

Vietnamese Sign Language (Ngôn ngữ ký hiệu Việt Nam, NNKH) has regional variants for the north, centre, and south of the country that are not mutually intelligible. There is no national professional interpreter standard, and no requirement for corporate employers in Vietnam to provide communication access in meetings. The absence of a legal framework for workplace reasonable accommodation means that deaf Vietnamese employees entering the formal corporate sector — particularly Vietnam's rapidly growing tech and manufacturing industries — do so without any structural communication support.

Vietnam's economy is expanding rapidly, with Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi developing significant tech, finance, and multinational corporate sectors. Remote and hybrid work has become standard across these industries, making verbal meeting participation more important than ever for professional advancement. Deaf and hard of hearing Vietnamese professionals are navigating this growth with none of the accessibility infrastructure that workers in comparable economies have. Captio AI captions Vietnamese in real time — handling the six-tone system, the North-South tonal variation, and the Vietnamese-English code-switching of a Hồ Chí Minh City startup standup — so every meeting is accessible.
