Why Captio AI

Built for the speed of a real meeting

Captions while they are still speaking

Words appear on screen as each person talks — not after they finish. You read what someone is saying at the same moment everyone else hears it.

Works in any meeting format

Conference rooms, open-plan offices, video calls, all-hands. Place the phone on the table or hold it — Captio AI handles the rest.

Handles fast speech and crosstalk

Captio AI is designed for real meetings, not controlled dictation. It follows whoever is speaking loudest at any moment, keeping up with the natural pace of discussion.

No setup, no explaining

Open the app and place the phone. No pairing, no telling colleagues what you are doing, no requesting anything from the meeting organiser.

Review everything after

Record the meeting and upload it to Audio Transcription for a full written record. Use AI Summary to extract decisions and action items so nothing from the meeting gets lost.

60+ languages

For international teams, multilingual meetings, or colleagues who switch between languages mid-discussion. No setup required — Captio AI detects and captions in real time.

Slovenian

Why Slovenian is hard to understand

Dialect fragmentation

  • 46 recognised dialects — each sounds different in a meeting room
  • Slovenian has approximately 46 recognised dialects grouped into 7 main groups, making it the most dialectally fragmented South Slavic language for its size. A deaf professional in Ljubljana may encounter colleagues from Carinthia (Koroška), Styria (Štajerska), and the Littoral (Primorska) in the same meeting — each bringing a distinct phonological profile that Standard Slovenian barely represents.

Tonal varieties

  • Some dialects use pitch to distinguish word meaning
  • A north-south band of central Slovenian dialects is tonemic — pitch (rising vs. falling) distinguishes otherwise identical word forms. This distinction is entirely invisible on the lips, and a deaf attendee from a non-tonal variety has no reference for recovering it in a meeting.

Vowel length

  • Long and short vowels contrast meaning but compress in fast speech
  • Standard Slovenian distinguishes vowel length, but in fast professional speech the length contrast reduces and unstressed vowels weaken. In a rapid Ljubljana standup or fast-paced board meeting, reduced forms diverge from citation pronunciation enough to make familiar technical terms unrecognisable.

Consonant clusters

  • Word-initial clusters challenge lip-reading and acoustic capture
  • Slovenian tolerates complex word-initial consonant clusters — /vz-/, /šk-/, /skl-/ — that are rare in other European languages. In a meeting where a colleague says a technical term beginning with such a cluster, the compressed articulation at the lips provides minimal visual information.

Code-switching

  • German and English terms enter Slovenian meeting speech without transition
  • Slovenian professional environments — particularly in manufacturing, tourism, and technology — draw German vocabulary from historical Austrian influence and English from modern business culture. A Slovenian colleague may switch to German for a technical term, then to English for an acronym, all within a single sentence.

The Challenge

Hearing loss and accessibility in Slovenia

Slovenia has a relatively progressive framework for deaf accessibility — the Act on the Use of Slovene Sign Language provides certified interpreters, and as of the most recent count, 46 certified sign language interpreters are available nationally. Government press conferences have been live-interpreted, and the national broadcaster RTV SLO provides interpreter and subtitle coverage on daily news. Yet Slovenia's response to the OHCHR questionnaire on disability-inclusive policies noted that the number of cochlear implants for the deaf 'should be increased' — a signal that the clinical pipeline does not match demand.

The GBD 2019 study (The Lancet / PMC7960691) estimates hearing loss prevalence at approximately one in five people globally — a rate that, applied to Slovenia's population of approximately two million, suggests roughly 400,000 Slovenians with some degree of hearing difficulty. Interpreter provision covers public and legal settings better than private workplaces, where real-time accessible meeting participation remains largely dependent on individual employer initiative rather than structural support.

Slovenia's export-oriented economy — concentrated in manufacturing, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and professional services — is heavily internationally integrated, meaning professional meetings routinely combine Slovenian with German and English. For a deaf Slovenian professional in a Maribor manufacturing company or a Ljubljana tech firm, the combination of dialectally diverse Slovenian, German technical vocabulary, and English business terminology in a single meeting session is a phonological challenge that no single-language captioning tool addresses. Captio AI captions the full multilingual mix in real time, so a deaf professional in a Koper logistics meeting or a Kranj automotive briefing follows every word as it is spoken.
