Why Slovenian is hard to understand
Dialect fragmentation
- 46 recognised dialects — each sounds different in a meeting room
- Slovenian has approximately 46 recognised dialects grouped into 7 main groups, making it the most dialectally fragmented South Slavic language for its size. A deaf professional in Ljubljana may encounter colleagues from Carinthia (Koroška), Styria (Štajerska), and the Littoral (Primorska) in the same meeting — each bringing a distinct phonological profile that Standard Slovenian barely represents.
Tonal varieties
- Some dialects use pitch to distinguish word meaning
- A north-south band of central Slovenian dialects is tonemic — pitch (rising vs. falling) distinguishes otherwise identical word forms. This distinction is entirely invisible on the lips, and a deaf attendee from a non-tonal variety has no reference for recovering it in a meeting.
Vowel length
- Long and short vowels contrast meaning but compress in fast speech
- Standard Slovenian distinguishes vowel length, but in fast professional speech the length contrast reduces and unstressed vowels weaken. Consonant clusters

- Slovenian tolerates complex word-initial consonant clusters — /vz-/, /šk-/, /skl-/ — that are rare in other European languages. In a meeting where a colleague says a technical term beginning with such a cluster, the compressed articulation at the lips provides minimal visual information.

- German and English terms enter Slovenian meeting speech without transition
