Why Captio AI

Built for the speed of a real meeting

Captions while they are still speaking

Words appear on screen as each person talks — not after they finish. You read what someone is saying at the same moment everyone else hears it.

Works in any meeting format

Conference rooms, open-plan offices, video calls, all-hands. Place the phone on the table or hold it — Captio AI handles the rest.

Handles fast speech and crosstalk

Captio AI is designed for real meetings, not controlled dictation. It follows whoever is speaking loudest at any moment, keeping up with the natural pace of discussion.

No setup, no explaining

Open the app and place the phone. No pairing, no telling colleagues what you are doing, no requesting anything from the meeting organiser.

Review everything after

Record the meeting and upload it to Audio Transcription for a full written record. Use AI Summary to extract decisions and action items so nothing from the meeting gets lost.

60+ languages

For international teams, multilingual meetings, or colleagues who switch between languages mid-discussion. No setup required — Captio AI detects and captions in real time.

Lithuanian

Why Lithuanian is hard to understand

Pitch accent

  • Rising and falling tones distinguish words that look alike on the lips
  • Lithuanian uses a lexical pitch accent system with rising and falling tones on stressed syllables. In a meeting, minimal pairs that differ only by tone are indistinguishable by lip-reading — the distinction is entirely acoustic and requires real-time audio capture to recover.

Palatalization

  • 22 pairs of consonants split by softness
  • Lithuanian distinguishes 22 pairs of hard and soft (palatalized) consonants. The palatal distinction is subtle acoustically and nearly invisible visually — a soft /l'/ versus a hard /l/ differ by a brief tongue-body raise that produces no visible lip movement change. In a meeting this means a deaf attendee cannot reliably distinguish minimal pairs from the speaker's face alone.

Samogitian gap

  • Samogitian sounds like a different language in a meeting room
  • Samogitian, spoken in northwestern Lithuania, has its own distinct phonology with different vowel qualities, diphthongs, and vocabulary from Standard Lithuanian. A deaf attendee calibrated to standard Aukštaitian Lithuanian may lose coherence entirely when a Samogitian colleague speaks at normal meeting pace.

Vowel length reduction

  • Long and short vowels merge in fast corporate speech
  • Lithuanian has an 11-vowel system with length distinctions, but in fast corporate speech vowel lengths reduce and merge. In a rapid exchange during a Vilnius standup, the acoustic signal diverges sharply from the citation form that a lip-reader may have learned.

English code-switching

  • Business terms enter Lithuanian sentences without transition
  • Lithuanian corporate meetings routinely embed English technical terms, brand names, and acronyms into Lithuanian syntax. For a deaf attendee, the sudden switch to English phonology — different vowel qualities, different consonant clusters — creates a new calibration challenge mid-sentence.

The Challenge

Hearing loss and workplace exclusion in Lithuania

Lithuania carries a distinct genetic burden that makes hearing loss more prevalent than population size alone would suggest. A study published in BMC Medical Genetics (PMC4761217) found that the carrier rate of GJB2 gene mutations — the most common genetic cause of congenital deafness — is approximately 7.1% (roughly 1 in 14) among healthy Lithuanian participants, one of the highest rates reported in Europe. This elevated carrier frequency means that congenital and early-onset hearing loss is disproportionately common in Lithuania, affecting professional participation from the start of working life.

The GBD 2019 study (PMC7960691, The Lancet) estimated 1.57 billion people globally with hearing loss, of whom 403 million have moderate or higher severity. Lithuania has not published dedicated national hearing disability prevalence surveys comparable to those of Nordic countries, meaning deaf and hard-of-hearing Lithuanians are frequently invisible in policy data. Lithuanian Sign Language (Lietuvių gestų kalba) has an active community, but interpreter availability for workplace settings — particularly outside Vilnius — is limited, leaving corporate meetings as frequently inaccessible environments.

Lithuania's rapid economic integration into the EU and the growth of its technology, logistics, and finance sectors have made professional meetings central to working life. The combination of pitch-accent Lithuanian phonology, significant dialectal variation (particularly Samogitian), and the high density of English business vocabulary in corporate speech means that standard captioning tools consistently underperform on Lithuanian meeting audio. Captio AI addresses this directly, providing real-time Lithuanian captions on a personal device during a Vilnius fintech standup, a Kaunas manufacturing briefing, or a Klaipėda logistics call.
