Why Persian is hard to understand
Back consonants in formal speech
- Persian formal vocabulary uses uvular consonants produced with no visible lip movement
- Formal Persian draws on Arabic and classical Persian loanwords with uvular /q/ and uvular fricative /χ/. These consonants are produced far back in the throat with zero visible lip movement. In a board meeting, legal presentation, or formal team briefing, these back consonants appear throughout — entirely invisible to a deaf participant.
Vowel length contrasts
- Persian vowel length distinctions that carry meaning collapse in fast meeting speech
- Persian distinguishes short and long vowels phonemically. In fast Tehran meeting speech, these length contrasts reduce and merge under time pressure. A deaf participant with residual hearing loses the phonemic distinction that separates different words at exactly the speed of a real working meeting.

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis published in PMC estimated the prevalence of occupational NIHL in Iran at 34.69% — a rate reflecting widespread exposure to excessive noise levels across Iran's large industrial, construction, and manufacturing workforce. This occupational burden adds substantially to the broader population of Iranians with hearing difficulty navigating formal professional environments.
Socioeconomic inequalities in disability in Iran show a pronounced geographic gradient — a PMC study found that poorer provinces have disproportionately higher prevalence of deafness and hearing disorders. This means the deaf and hard of hearing population is concentrated in regions with the least access to workplace accommodation, the fewest trained sign language interpreters, and the most limited corporate accessibility infrastructure. Iranian Sign Language (ISL) exists but has no standardised professional interpreter provision for corporate meetings.
