- Business Hindi's core sounds are invisible on the lips — and meetings move fast
- Retroflex consonants (ट, ड, ण) and aspirated stops (ख, घ, छ) are central to Hindi and articulated with almost no distinguishing lip movement. In a meeting where someone is presenting a project timeline or running through action items at speed, these ambiguities stack up faster than a lip-reader can recover. The stakes in a meeting are higher than at the market stall — a misread here means a missed task, not a missed errand.
Regional accent mix

India is home to approximately 63 million deaf and hard of hearing people, the second-largest such population in the world. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPWD, 2016) mandates a 5% reservation for disabled employees in government jobs, and the Companies Act incentivises private sector inclusion. In practice, the employment pipeline for deaf people in India is broken before it reaches the workplace: less than 5% of deaf children attend school, according to the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness, producing a workforce pipeline gap that no quota can address.
For those who do reach professional employment, the meeting room remains the most hostile daily environment. India has no nationally standardised sign language and no interpreter provision in corporate settings. A deaf employee at an Indian tech company, bank, or government office attends every meeting — every standup, every client call, every all-hands — without any formal support. The RPWD Act does not specify a captioning or interpreter standard for informal workplace communication, and no employer guideline or industry body has filled that gap.
Research on employment outcomes for persons with disabilities in India (PMC, 2016) found that disability is consistently associated with lower employment probability and lower earnings, with hearing disability specifically associated with exclusion from communication-dependent roles.
