Why Portuguese is hard to understand
Nasal vowels at speed
- Nasal Portuguese at meeting pace reduces visible mouth movement to almost nothing
- Brazilian Portuguese nasal vowels — ã, ẽ, õ — are a defining phonological feature, and at casual meeting speed they produce very little visible lip movement. When a manager is running through a project update at natural pace, the nasal articulation makes word boundaries and phoneme distinctions visually indistinguishable. Lip-reading a Brazilian standup or client call is structurally compromised in a way that affects common business vocabulary at every sentence.
Brazil vs Portugal in meetings
- European Portuguese in a global call is harder to follow than Brazilian
- European Portuguese reduces unstressed vowels so dramatically that Brazilians often struggle to understand it by ear. In a multinational meeting with Portuguese and Brazilian participants, a deaf person accustomed to Brazilian pronunciation will miss large portions of what the Lisbon colleague says — and vice versa. Global Portuguese-language companies have no accessibility standard that addresses this intra-language variation.
Interrogative intonation
- Brazilian questions look identical to statements on the lips
- Brazilian Portuguese forms questions primarily through rising intonation rather than changed word order. 'Você aprova.' (You approve.) and 'Você aprova?' (Do you approve?) are identical lip movements — distinguished only by pitch, which is entirely invisible to a deaf person. In a meeting's Q&A or decision moment, getting statement and question confused changes what the conversation means entirely.
Gíria in office speech
- Brazilian office culture uses a fast informal register in all but the most formal moments
- Brazilian professional culture is warm, informal, and relationship-driven — which means the formal register of an official presentation quickly gives way to gíria (slang), dropped vowels, and the compressed casual speech of real Brazilian interaction. The formality level shifts mid-meeting, and with it the visual parsability of what is being said.
English code-switching

- Brazilian corporate culture — especially in tech, startups, and multinationals — mixes Portuguese and English mid-sentence for technical vocabulary, product names, and strategic concepts. Brazil has 2.3 million people who cannot hear at all or can hear only loud sounds, according to IBGE's 2019 National Health Survey (PNS). Among working-age Brazilians with hearing impairment, the employment-population ratio is only 25.4% — less than half the rate for hearing individuals. Only 28.3% of all working-age Brazilians with disabilities are in the workforce at all, compared to 66.3% of those without disabilities.
