Germany has approximately 235,000 people who are deaf or severely hard of hearing, and a further 11.1 million adults — around 16% of the adult population — with some degree of hearing impairment, according to a nationwide prevalence study published in PMC. That figure is projected to rise by approximately 1% every five years as the workforce ages. The majority of this population is working-age, and most work in environments where verbal meetings are the primary format for decision-making, feedback, and professional visibility.
German employment law — Social Code IX (SGB IX) and the Disability Equality Act (BGG) — mandates workplace accommodations for people with disabilities, including hearing impairment. But interpreter provision for Deutsche Gebärdensprache (DGS) in corporate settings remains severely limited. The number of trained DGS interpreters falls far short of the demand from Germany's deaf workforce, and most mid-sized companies have no established process for providing communication access in daily meetings, standup calls, or one-on-ones.
