Why Bosnian is hard to understand
Pitch accent
- Four tones distinguish words that look identical on the lips
- Bosnian uses the Neo-Shtokavian pitch accent system with four distinct accents — short rising, short falling, long rising, long falling. In a meeting, minimal pairs that differ only by tone and vowel length provide no visual cue at the lips, requiring acoustic capture to distinguish them reliably.
Jat reflex variation
- Ijekavian and Ekavian realisations shift the same word's vowels
- Standard Bosnian uses Ijekavian pronunciation (historical *jat* > /je/ or /ije/), while Serbian speakers in the same meeting may use Ekavian (*jat* > /e/). A word like 'mlijeko' becomes 'mleko' — the same meaning, a different sound shape, requiring constant recalibration during mixed meetings.
Turkish loanwords
- Ottoman-era vocabulary appears in informal professional speech
- Bosnian retains more Turkish and Arabic loanwords in everyday and professional speech than Croatian or Serbian. Persons with disabilities represent 8.2% of the population in Bosnia and Herzegovina and are consistently identified as the most vulnerable, excluded, and marginalised group in the country. Research on deaf and hard-of-hearing adults in Bosnia documents structural exclusion from the labour market: approximately 80% of adult deaf persons who completed education and professional rehabilitation did not undergo the work-ability evaluation procedures required for formal employment, according to a study on professional rehabilitation of the deaf in Bosnia published by the Faculty of Defectology. This administrative gap means that most deaf working-age adults in Bosnia are formally outside the recognised labour force.
Discrimination against persons with disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina remains widespread. A 2017 report in the Sarajevo Times noted that awareness of sign language is very low and that information is rarely adapted for deaf individuals in professional or institutional settings.
