Why Captio AI

Built for the speed of a real meeting

Captions while they are still speaking

Words appear on screen as each person talks — not after they finish. You read what someone is saying at the same moment everyone else hears it.

Works in any meeting format

Conference rooms, open-plan offices, video calls, all-hands. Place the phone on the table or hold it — Captio AI handles the rest.

Handles fast speech and crosstalk

Captio AI is designed for real meetings, not controlled dictation. It follows whoever is speaking loudest at any moment, keeping up with the natural pace of discussion.

No setup, no explaining

Open the app and place the phone. No pairing, no telling colleagues what you are doing, no requesting anything from the meeting organiser.

Review everything after

Record the meeting and upload it to Audio Transcription for a full written record. Use AI Summary to extract decisions and action items so nothing from the meeting gets lost.

60+ languages

For international teams, multilingual meetings, or colleagues who switch between languages mid-discussion. No setup required — Captio AI detects and captions in real time.

Czech

Why Czech is hard to understand

Consonant clusters

  • Czech consonant clusters without vowels compress at meeting pace into a single indistinguishable blur on the lips
  • Czech allows syllabic consonants without a vowel nucleus, and business vocabulary contains clusters like /str/, /prz/, /skr/ where multiple consonants compress into a short frame on the lips. A hard of hearing person reading the lips of a Czech colleague in a meeting sees these clusters as a rapid series of indistinguishable front-of-mouth shapes — a density of information that visual speech perception cannot resolve.

ř — a unique phoneme

  • Czech's /ř/ — a trilled fricative that exists in no other standard language — has no visual reference in any lip-reading vocabulary
  • The Czech /ř/ ('řeka', 'řídit', 'přece') is a sound unique to Czech — a simultaneous alveolar trill and fricative articulated with the tongue blade near the alveolar ridge and the lips open. Visually it is indistinct from /r/ or /z/. A deaf or hard of hearing person who has developed their lip-reading vocabulary in any other language has no visual reference point for this phoneme — creating a systematic gap.

Bohemian vs Moravian prosody

  • Moravian Czech has level intonation and fuller vowels — a prosodic profile different from Prague standard that creates a recognition gap in cross-regional meetings
  • Bohemian Czech tends to centralise short vowels and has characteristic falling intonation. Moravian Czech retains fuller vowel quality and has a level, slightly rising intonation — a distinct prosodic signature that changes vowel visibility and sentence rhythm on the lips. In a meeting connecting Prague and Brno colleagues, a deaf lip-reader familiar with one variety encounters what looks like a different language from the other.

Vowel length contrast

  • Czech phonemic vowel length distinguishes meaning, but at meeting pace the duration difference compresses and disappears from the visual stream
  • Czech distinguishes short and long vowels phonemically: 'mas' vs 'máš', 'pas' vs 'pás'. At slow, careful speech the long vowels are identifiable by slightly longer lip duration. At meeting pace, vowel length compression eliminates this cue — meaning a deaf or hard of hearing person misreads systematic vocabulary distinctions in every sentence.

Czech–English code-switching

  • Prague tech and finance meetings embed English vocabulary into Czech sentences, creating mid-sentence shifts in phonological system
  • Czech corporate culture increasingly incorporates English management, IT, and financial vocabulary. In a Prague standup, a sentence may start in Czech phonology — a cluster-heavy system — and end with English loanwords delivered with English vowels and consonants. A deaf person lip-reading Czech encounters these English segments as phonologically mismatched with the Czech context they were tracking.

The Challenge

Hearing loss and workplace exclusion in the Czech Republic

Up to 300,000 people in the Czech Republic live with hearing impairment, according to the Czech Republic's member profile at the European Union of the Deaf. Among these, approximately 10,000 are Deaf sign language users — supported by only 70 working sign language interpreters in the country. This interpreter-to-deaf-population ratio is one of the lowest in the European Union, meaning that most deaf professionals in the Czech Republic attend formal meetings, negotiations, and training sessions without real-time sign language support. The Czech Republic ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2009, establishing a legal framework for workplace accommodation that has not yet been matched by interpreter provision.

Research on the genetic aetiology of non-syndromic hearing loss in the Moravian-Silesian region (PMC6037260) highlights the geographic distribution of hearing loss across Czech regions — including Ostrava, Brno, and Olomouc — rather than only in Prague. Yet interpreter services and assistive technology support are concentrated in the capital, creating a geographic accessibility gap for deaf professionals in Moravia and Silesia who navigate meeting-heavy roles without the same level of support infrastructure available in Prague.

The Czech technology and manufacturing sectors — among the largest employers in the country — operate in heavily verbal meeting cultures that increasingly integrate English management vocabulary into Czech business speech. For a deaf professional in a Prague tech company or a Brno engineering firm, the standard business meeting combines the acoustic complexity of Czech phonology (cluster-heavy consonant inventory, unique /ř/, vowel length contrasts) with English-code-switching that no standard Czech captioning tool was designed to handle simultaneously.
