Built for the speed of a real meeting
Captions while they are still speaking
Words appear on screen as each person talks — not after they finish. You read what someone is saying at the same moment everyone else hears it.
Works in any meeting format
Conference rooms, open-plan offices, video calls, all-hands. Place the phone on the table or hold it — Captio AI handles the rest.
Handles fast speech and crosstalk
Captio AI is designed for real meetings, not controlled dictation. It follows whoever is speaking loudest at any moment, keeping up with the natural pace of discussion.
No setup, no explaining
Open the app and place the phone. No pairing, no telling colleagues what you are doing, no requesting anything from the meeting organiser.
Review everything after
Record the meeting and upload it to Audio Transcription for a full written record. Use AI Summary to extract decisions and action items so nothing from the meeting gets lost.
60+ languages
For international teams, multilingual meetings, or colleagues who switch between languages mid-discussion. No setup required — Captio AI detects and captions in real time.
Why Tamil is hard to understand
Formal/colloquial register gap
- Tamil presentations and team discussion use two phonologically distinct registers
- Tamil has a deep divide between the formal literary register (centamil) used in presentations and official communications, and the colloquial spoken register (kotuntamil) of actual working meetings. A meeting that opens with a formal slide deck and moves to team discussion shifts phonological register completely — a deaf participant faces two different signals in a single session.
Retroflex inventory
- Tamil's retroflex consonants collapse at the visual level in fast meeting speech
- Tamil has a large retroflex consonant set including the unique retroflex approximant /ɻ/ (ழ), found in no other language. In fast meeting speech, retroflexes reduce toward dental and alveolar positions — the acoustically distinct contrasts disappear entirely at the visual level, leaving a deaf participant with no signal to distinguish them.
Indian–Sri Lankan Tamil divergence
- Chennai Tamil and Jaffna Tamil sound genuinely different on the same call
- Indian Tamil (Chennai, Coimbatore) and Sri Lankan Tamil (Jaffna, Batticaloa) diverged significantly in phonology. Sri Lankan Tamil preserves retroflex distinctions and older phonological features lost in Indian varieties. In a multinational meeting with Tamil-speaking colleagues from both countries, a deaf participant faces different phonological systems from different speakers.
Tamil–English code-switching in tech
- Chennai's tech sector switches between Tamil and English throughout every meeting
- Chennai and Coimbatore's software and manufacturing sectors run meetings that switch between Tamil and English mid-sentence. Technical vocabulary, product names, and metrics arrive in English layered over Tamil sentence structure. For a deaf participant, tracking which language is active at any point doubles the cognitive processing load.
Geminate consonants
- Tamil geminate consonants carry meaning distinctions invisible on the lips
- Tamil distinguishes single and double consonants phonemically — a distinction carried in duration of consonant closure, not in visible mouth shape. In fast meeting speech, the timing distinction that separates two different words looks identical from across a conference room or through a video camera.

India has approximately 63 million people with disabling hearing loss. Tamil Nadu, one of India's most industrialised states and a major centre for automotive, IT, and manufacturing employment, has a significant hearing-impaired population — a Tamil Nadu study found that speech and hearing impaired people accounted for 16% of all disability cases in the state. At the national level, the 2011 census revealed that of 13.4 million working-age hearing-disabled Indians, 73.9% were marginal workers — meaning only 26.1% held stable formal employment. In Tamil Nadu's IT corridor and manufacturing base, the gap between professional opportunity and communication access is concentrated and visible.
Sri Lanka has approximately 300,000 deaf and hard of hearing people — primarily Tamil-speaking in the north and east. The country's sign language infrastructure was severely disrupted by decades of civil conflict, and professional interpreter provision for corporate meetings in Tamil-speaking professional environments remains limited. For Tamil-speaking professionals across India and Sri Lanka, there is no equivalent of a national corporate captioning or interpreter standard.
Tamil's unique phonological position — the only major language to preserve a classical literary register in active daily use alongside its spoken colloquial form — means that every meeting demands phonological processing at two levels simultaneously. Chennai's growing tech sector and Tamil Nadu's expanding industrial base create a more meeting-heavy professional environment than previous generations of Tamil employment experienced. Captio AI captions Tamil in real time — including the formal centamil of a board presentation, the colloquial kotuntamil of team discussion, and the Tamil-English code-switching of a Chennai software sprint — so every meeting is accessible.

People love Captio AI
"Chennai tech meetings switch between Tamil and English constantly and the colloquial speech in the standup sounds nothing like the formal Tamil in the presentation. Captio AI handles both registers. I know what every sprint decision means now."
"Fast colloquial Tamil in a factory briefing is completely different from written Tamil. Captio AI handles the spoken register accurately. The daily production meeting is accessible for the first time in my career."
"Sri Lankan Tamil has its own phonological patterns that are different from Indian Tamil and most tools handle it badly. Captio AI captures the Jaffna-variety speech accurately. Video calls with Chennai colleagues are finally manageable."
"Singapore Tamil meetings mix Tamil, English, and occasionally Malay. Captio AI follows the Tamil and English accurately. I stopped asking colleagues to repeat every second sentence."
