Why Croatian is hard to understand
Four-pitch accent system
- Standard Croatian has four lexical pitch accents — short/long × rising/falling — entirely acoustic and invisible on the lips
- Standard Croatian distinguishes four pitch accents: short rising, short falling, long rising, long falling. These distinctions are carried entirely by the voice's pitch contour and syllable duration — producing no visible lip, tooth, or facial movement. A deaf or hard of hearing person lip-reading a Croatian colleague in a meeting cannot access pitch accent at all, losing a phonemic layer that native speakers hear automatically.
Ijekavian yat reflex
- Standard Croatian's Ijekavian pronunciation adds 'ije' or 'je' syllables to common words — extra syllables that appear in unexpected positions on the lips
- Standard Croatian uses Ijekavian pronunciation for the old Slavic phoneme yat: 'dijete' (child), 'mlijeko' (milk), 'vrijeme' (time). The extra 'je' or 'ije' syllable adds a rapid lip-rounding that a deaf lip-reader encounters as an unexpected element in familiar Slavic vocabulary. A deaf person calibrated to Serbian Ekavian forms sees what looks like extra syllables that their lip-reading vocabulary doesn't account for.
Kajkavian dialect gap
- Kajkavian Croatian — spoken in and around Zagreb — is barely mutually intelligible with Standard Štokavian and looks like a different language on the lips
- Kajkavian Croatian is so distinct from Standard Štokavian Croatian that linguists debate whether it constitutes a separate language. It shares more phonological features with Slovene than with standard Croatian. In a Zagreb meeting where a colleague's natural speech is Kajkavian-influenced, a deaf lip-reader who has learned Standard Croatian encounters systematically different phonology — different vowels, different consonant clusters, different prosody.
Čakavian coastal phonology
- Čakavian — spoken on the Dalmatian coast and Adriatic islands — retains archaic vowel qualities that look different from standard in a video meeting
- Čakavian Croatian (spoken along the Dalmatian coast, islands, and Istria) retains archaic vowel features and stress patterns that differ from Standard Štokavian. In a video call with a colleague from Split, Hvar, or a Dalmatian island, a deaf lip-reader familiar with Zagreb standard encounters vowel shapes that correspond to different words — a visual mismatch rooted in centuries of separate phonological development.
Croatian–English code-switching
- Zagreb's technology and corporate sector embeds English vocabulary into Croatian sentences, creating mid-sentence phonological transitions
- Croatia's technology, tourism, and services sectors integrate English management, IT, and financial vocabulary into professional Croatian. In a Zagreb tech or finance meeting, a sentence may be structured in Croatian but contain English loanwords delivered with English phonology. A deaf person lip-reading Croatian encounters these English segments as unexpected phonological mismatches mid-sentence.

Croatia's 2011 census recorded 13,230 persons with impaired hearing, of whom 2,763 had total or major disability. The Croatian Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, founded in 1921, today has approximately 9,000 members across 23 regional organisations — one of the oldest deaf advocacy structures in the region. Research published in PMC (PMC3583401) on deaf education in Croatia documents the historical development of deaf schooling and the persistent challenges in transitioning from oralist educational approaches to sign language and inclusive education.
Croatia joined the European Union in 2013, which brought CRPD obligations and EU accessibility framework requirements. However, a PMC study on deaf education notes that Croatian deaf students historically faced structural barriers in educational attainment — creating a pipeline effect where lower educational levels translate into concentration in lower-skilled roles and reduced access to meeting-heavy professional positions. The interpreter infrastructure for professional settings — corporate meetings, negotiations, training — remains limited relative to the size of the hearing-impaired population.
Croatia's technology, tourism, and financial sectors — concentrated in Zagreb and growing coastal centres — are meeting-intensive professional environments. The three-dialect structure of Croatian (Štokavian standard, Kajkavian around Zagreb, Čakavian on the Dalmatian coast) creates an accessibility challenge that goes beyond standard phonology: a deaf professional in a Zagreb company who joins a video call with Dalmatian colleagues encounters what is effectively a different phonological system for the same written language.
