Why Gujarati is hard to understand
Breathy vowel phonation
- Gujarati's breathy vowels are a purely acoustic phonemic contrast invisible on the lips
- Gujarati has a unique four-way phonation contrast that extends to vowels as well as consonants: voiced, voiceless, aspirated, and breathy-voiced. Breathy (murmured) vowels are phonemically distinct from plain vowels. This contrast is carried entirely in voice quality — a purely acoustic signal with zero visual representation at the lips.
Four-way stop contrasts
- Gujarati consonant contrasts that change meaning look identical in meeting speech
- Gujarati's consonant inventory includes the full four-way voiced/voiceless × aspirated/unaspirated stop contrasts of South Asian languages. In fast meeting speech, pa/pha/ba/bha distinctions that change word meaning entirely produce near-identical lip shapes. A deaf participant has no visual signal to tell them apart.

Across India, the 2011 census revealed that of 13.4 million working-age hearing-disabled people, 73.9% were marginal workers, with only 26.1% in stable formal employment.
