Why Catalan is hard to understand
Vowel reduction
- Unstressed vowels collapse in natural speech
- Eastern Catalan — the standard — reduces all unstressed /a/ and /e/ to a neutral schwa and merges /o/ and /u/. In a fast meeting, whole syllables disappear from the acoustic signal, leaving a deaf attendee with a far shorter word shape to lip-read than the written form suggests.
Sibilant complexity
- Seven sibilant sounds that look alike on the lips
- Standard Catalan distinguishes up to eight sibilant phonemes — /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /ts/, /dz/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/ — while dialects like Central Valencian collapse these to just three or four. Across a video call, the difference between a Barcelona and a Valencia colleague can make a key technical term unrecognisable.
Dialect gap
- Eastern and Western Catalan sound like different registers
- Eastern Catalan (Barcelona, Balearics) and Western Catalan (Valencian, Lleida area) differ in vowel systems, sibilant inventories, and prosody. A Balearic speaker drops the schwa alternation entirely, while a Valencian speaker preserves more vowel distinctions. Mixed-dialect conference calls present shifting phonological targets.
Code-switching
- Spanish enters meetings mid-sentence without warning
- Professional environments in Catalonia, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands routinely switch between Catalan and Spanish within a single sentence. A deaf attendee tracking Catalan phonology may miss the shift to Spanish entirely, since the prosodic rhythm continues without a pause.
Final devoicing
- Word-final consonants lose their voicing contrast
- Catalan devoices all word-final obstruents, so /b/, /d/, /ɡ/ become identical to /p/, /t/, /k/ at the end of a word. In a meeting where a colleague names a proper noun or technical term ending in a voiced consonant, the lip-readable cue disappears entirely.

A 2021 monograph on deaf students in Spain published by FIAPAS documented consistent gaps between legal accessibility obligations and actual provision — particularly in professional and higher-education settings where real-time interpretation is rarely available and captioning is almost never provided as a standard accommodation.
