Why Gujarati is hard to understand

- Gujarati is identified as one of the hardest Indian languages to lip-read
- Research cited in linguist analyses identifies Gujarati as one of the most difficult Indian languages to decipher through lip-reading. The phonemes central to Gujarati — /g/, /n/, /k/, /th/ and /d/ — require very little lip movement, giving a deaf lip-reader almost no visual surface to work with. The result is that visually ambiguous sounds appear throughout everyday Gujarati conversation.
Aspirated and breathy-voice contrast
- Gujarati has aspirated and murmured (breathy-voice) contrasts — both invisible at the lips
- Gujarati is unusual even among South Asian languages for having a three-way contrast: plain, aspirated, and breathy-voiced (murmured) stops. Breathy voice is produced at the larynx — entirely internal. For a deaf lip-reader, plain, aspirated, and murmured stops all produce the same lip closure. Multiple phonological categories collapse into a single visual signal.

- Two dozen Gujarati dialect varieties use different vowel and prosodic patterns
- Gujarat has approximately two dozen distinct dialect varieties: Surati, Kathiyawadi, Kutchi-influenced, Charotari, Amdavadi, and more. Each carries different vowel qualities and prosodic patterns. A deaf person who lip-reads one variety finds that a hearing family member from another region of Gujarat uses different mouth shapes for the same words.
Diaspora code-switching
- UK and US Gujarati communities switch between Gujarati and English mid-sentence
- Large Gujarati-speaking communities in Leicester, Harrow, New Jersey, and across the UK and US have developed pervasive Gujarati-English code-switching. For a deaf lip-reader, language switching mid-sentence without auditory warning collapses disambiguation — suddenly the mouth shapes don't match Gujarati, but the words aren't fully English either.
Nasal vowels and vowel length
- Gujarati nasalisation and vowel length are auditory — invisible at the lips
- Gujarati has phonemic vowel nasalization and vowel length distinctions that change word meaning. Both are auditory features with no visible counterpart. The mouth shape for a nasalized vowel and its oral counterpart is identical; short and long vowels at the same quality look the same. A deaf lip-reader loses these distinctions entirely.
