Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

👨‍👩‍👧Family conversations

A Bulgarian family meal where multiple generations talk over each other — grandparents in Sofia dialect, parents in standard Bulgarian, kids mixing in English words. Captio AI keeps up with every voice.

💼As a hearing colleague

In a Bulgarian office where conversations shift between formal standard Bulgarian and regional accents, Captio AI lets a deaf colleague follow hallway talk, team check-ins, and the casual banter that hearing colleagues take for granted.

❤️Partners and relationships

A hearing partner who grew up with Sofia or Plovdiv speech habits can speak naturally. Captio AI captions every word in real time, so conversation at home is never one-sided.

🏠Living together

Whether it is morning small talk, a shared task, or a spontaneous question from the next room, Captio AI lets a deaf or hard of hearing flatmate stay part of everyday home life in Bulgaria.

🤝Introducing someone new

Meeting a hearing Bulgarian friend, new neighbour, or family member for the first time. Captio AI captures their speech in real time so the introduction does not have to be slowed down or repeated.

👥Mixed group settings

At a Bulgarian family gathering, village celebration, or group dinner where multiple people speak at once, Captio AI captions the conversation so a deaf or hard of hearing person is part of the room.

Captio AI in everyday use
Why Captio AI

You talk. They follow. No adjustment needed.

You speak naturally

No slowing down, no special phrasing, no training required. Captio AI handles everything — you just talk the way you always do.

They read as you speak

Your words appear on their screen word by word while you are still talking. Not a summary after — the full sentence, in real time.

Works wherever you both are

Living rooms, offices, restaurants, social gatherings. No venue setup, no special conditions. Captio AI works anywhere you have a conversation.

No sign language from either side

You do not need to learn anything new. Neither do they. Captio AI bridges the gap without requiring any change to how either of you communicates.

Works with how you actually speak

Fast, accented, casual. Captio AI handles real speech — not just slow, clear dictation. You do not need to perform clarity for it to work.

Private by default

Your conversations are never recorded, stored, or shared. Audio is processed in real time and discarded immediately — nothing is kept.

Bulgarian

Why Bulgarian is hard to understand

Vowel reduction

  • Unstressed vowels collapse in casual speech
  • Bulgarian unstressed /o/ and /e/ reduce dramatically in a pattern called akanye — so the same written word sounds different depending on stress position. Lip readers who match lip shapes to written letters find the relationship breaks down in natural, fast Bulgarian conversation.

Palatalization pairs

  • Soft and hard consonant pairs look identical on the lips
  • Bulgarian has hard and soft (palatalized) versions of most consonants, with the difference made by the tongue arching toward the palate — not by any lip movement. Two words that differ only in palatalization are visually indistinguishable when lip-read.

Dialect gap

  • Eastern and western Bulgarian follow different vowel rules
  • The boundary between western and eastern Bulgarian dialects runs through the middle of the country and produces sharply different vowel and liquid-consonant realizations. A lip reader calibrated to Sofia speech encounters unfamiliar patterns from Vidin or Varna speakers.

Consonant clusters

  • Complex onset clusters lose sounds in casual speech
  • Bulgarian permits dense consonant clusters at word beginnings. In fast everyday speech, consonants within the cluster drop, leaving lips at a different position than the written form predicts — and no vowel to anchor lip movement.

Script disconnect

  • Cyrillic text does not map to reduced casual vowels
  • Cyrillic spelling does not reflect the reduced, casual vowel sounds of spoken Bulgarian. A deaf or hard of hearing person who uses written Bulgarian as a reference for lip-reading finds the gap between text and everyday speech wider than expected.

The Challenge

120,000 Bulgarians live with hearing loss — most without official recognition or interpreter access.

According to data compiled by the European Union of the Deaf, approximately 120,000 people in Bulgaria have a hearing disability, yet only around 50,000 are able to communicate through Bulgarian Sign Language (BulSL). The gap between those living with hearing loss and those who have access to sign language means tens of thousands navigate everyday life — family conversations, healthcare, administrative offices — without any formal communication support.

Bulgarian Sign Language has no official legal recognition. Unlike several neighbouring EU countries that have codified their sign languages as linguistic rights, Bulgaria has no law granting BulSL protected status, no government body responsible for interpreter training, and no nationally funded interpreter service. Obtaining a qualified interpreter requires navigating a patchwork of charity organisations and informal networks.

Social integration for deaf and hard of hearing Bulgarians remains limited. Research reviewing the situation of deaf and hard of hearing people in Bulgaria highlights persistently low rates of tertiary education completion and high unemployment compared to the hearing population — outcomes directly linked to the absence of accessible communication support in educational settings and workplaces. The 2013 Deaflympics in Sofia raised public awareness of deaf culture, but legislative change has not followed.
