Why Danish is hard to understand
The stød
- A phonemic distinction made entirely in the larynx
- The stød — a laryngeal creaky phonation — distinguishes word pairs in Danish with no lip movement at all. 'Man' (one/pronoun) vs 'mand' (man/noun) are differentiated only by this voice quality. For a lip reader, both words look identical.
Plosive lenition
- Stop consonants dissolve between vowels
- Danish weakens and sometimes deletes stop consonants in intervocalic position — 'hvad' (what) becomes 'va', 'det er' (it is) becomes 'dear'. The lips stop and restart in patterns that hearing listeners fill in automatically, but that leave lip readers with empty space where a consonant should be.
Swallowed syllables
- Final sounds are famously deleted in everyday speech
- Danish systematically deletes final consonants and even full syllables. 'Ikke' (not) becomes 'i', 'selvfølgelig' compresses to two audible syllables. The written form and spoken form diverge so sharply that lip readers who use text as a guide are regularly misled.
27-vowel inventory
- Many vowels with near-identical lip positions
- Danish has approximately 27 vowel phonemes including distinctions of height, backness, rounding, and length. Several contrasts — particularly among the central and front vowels — produce nearly identical lip configurations, making vowel-by-vowel lip reading unreliable in Danish.
Dialect gap
- Jutland, Funen, and Bornholm sound very different from Copenhagen standard
- Standard Danish broadcasting is based on Copenhagen speech, but everyday Danish comes from Jutland dialects, Funen patterns, and Bornholmsk — all with different vowel systems and different rates of consonant deletion. A lip reader calibrated to broadcast standard encounters unfamiliar patterns in everyday family speech.

The Danish Deaf Association estimates that approximately 5,000 people in Denmark are deaf sign language users, with up to 20,000 using Danish Sign Language (DSL) daily. Despite Denmark's strong welfare state, a 2019 study found that only around 40% of deaf and hard of hearing adults are employed, compared to a general adult employment rate of 77% — a gap of 37 percentage points that reflects the structural barriers deaf people face in accessing work and workplace communication.
Adults with hearing loss in Denmark also experience significantly higher rates of physical and mental health conditions than the general population. A national survey (PubMed 28555382) found elevated incidences of depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders among adults with hearing loss, alongside higher rates of comorbidities including visual impairment and intellectual disability. These findings point to compounding exclusion: communication barriers in healthcare reduce access to the very services that could address elevated health risks.
Denmark has invested in some deaf-accessible media — DSL interpretation for certain broadcast news programmes — but interpretation services for everyday private life, family events, and workplace informal communication remain individually arranged. For the tens of thousands with hearing loss who do not use sign language, captioning and automatic speech recognition represent the primary accessible tool.
