Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

🍽️Family dinners

Slovenian family Sunday lunches, holiday gatherings, and birthday tables bring multiple generations to one room. Captio AI keeps the full conversation visible for deaf and hard-of-hearing family members, from quiet grandparents to faster-talking younger voices.

🎉Social gatherings and parties

House parties and neighbourhood get-togethers in Ljubljana, Maribor, or a smaller town move quickly between speakers. Captio AI follows each voice in real time so a deaf guest can join rather than observe from the edge.

Friend catch-ups

A coffee catch-up with Slovenian friends at a local kavarna is fast and low-key. Captio AI captions every exchange so a deaf or hard-of-hearing person can contribute rather than guess at what was said.

🌍Multilingual groups

Community meetings, vaška skupnost discussions, and local association events use conversational Slovenian at speed. Captio AI makes the full meeting followable without a professional interpreter.

👥Community and club meetings

When grandparents speak a regional dialect from Carinthia or the Littoral and grandchildren use urban Ljubljana Slovenian, the phonological gap is real. Captio AI handles both and keeps the multigenerational table connected.

🏠Shared living situations

Gatherings at a local football club, hiking group reunion, or wine cooperative evening involve fast exchanges between familiar members. Captio AI keeps a deaf or hard-of-hearing member part of every conversation.

Why Captio AI

Built to keep you in the conversation, not just in the room

Captions whoever is speaking

Captio AI follows the dominant voice at any moment — whoever is loudest in the microphone's direction. In a group conversation, this tracks the active speaker naturally.

Works through background noise

Restaurants, living rooms, parties, outdoor gatherings. Moderate background noise does not prevent accurate captions — Captio AI is built for real environments, not quiet rooms.

Place it in the centre and forget it

Put the phone on the table or in the middle of the group, microphone facing the conversation. No positioning it after every speaker change, no adjusting between voices.

Less effort, less fatigue

The cognitive load of following a group conversation by lip-reading and reconstructing speech is exhausting. Captio AI handles the following so you can direct your energy toward actually being in the conversation.

60+ languages

For multilingual families, mixed-language social groups, or gatherings where people switch between languages mid-conversation. No setup required between language changes.

No setup between conversations

Open the app and place the phone. No configuration per setting, no briefing the group, nothing to manage between conversations. It works for any group, in any situation.

Slovenian

Why Slovenian is hard to understand

Extreme dialect diversity

  • Seven dialect groups, sometimes mutually unintelligible
  • Slovenian has seven major dialect groups across a small geographic area, and dialects in distant regions — Primorska on the Italian border versus Prekmurje near Hungary — can be difficult for speakers of standard Slovenian to understand. At a family gathering with members from different regions, a deaf lip-reader encounters a mix of phonological systems rather than one consistent pattern.

Central dialect pitch accent

  • Tonal contrasts invisible on the lips
  • In a north-south band of central Slovenian dialects — Upper and Lower Carniolan and parts of Carinthian — phonemic tone contrasts exist, similar to Serbian's pitch accent. These prosodic distinctions are produced in the larynx and are entirely invisible on the face, making tonal word pairs indistinguishable by sight.

Vowel reduction in casual speech

  • Eight vowels shrink to fewer at speed
  • Standard Slovenian has eight vowel phonemes, but in fast conversational speech unstressed vowels reduce toward schwa or are dropped entirely. At a family dinner, the spoken phonological space narrows considerably, leaving a lip-reader fewer visual anchors than careful slow speech would provide.

Border language mixing

  • German and Italian enter without warning
  • In border communities with Austria and Italy, Slovenian is in constant contact with German and Italian. Carinthian Slovenes and Triestine community members code-switch freely, introducing phonological systems with completely different lip patterns mid-conversation and without any verbal signal.

Consonant alternations

  • Familiar words arrive in altered forms
  • Slovenian has systematic consonant alternations at morphological boundaries — /k/ becomes /č/, /g/ becomes /ž/ in inflected forms. A lip-reader who knows the base form of a word does not predict what the inflected form will look like. These alternations appear constantly in rapid natural speech.

The Challenge

Hearing loss in Slovenia: the scale of daily exclusion

Slovenia, with a population of just over 2.1 million, follows European hearing loss prevalence trends — meaning an estimated 200,000 to 420,000 Slovenians live with some degree of hearing difficulty. A 2025 review in Audiology Research (PMC12101339) found that people with hearing loss consistently face compounded barriers: stigma that deters help-seeking, socio-cultural differences in how hearing disability is perceived, and significant accessibility gaps across education, employment, and social settings. In Slovenia, as across Europe, the gap between the number of people affected and the number receiving appropriate support is substantial.

A systematic review of hearing loss, loneliness, and social isolation (PMC8292986) found strong associations between untreated hearing loss and reduced participation in community life — a pattern that is especially pronounced at informal social gatherings where no formal accessibility support exists. Slovenia's sign language (Slovenian Sign Language, SZJ) has constitutional and legal recognition, but interpreter availability outside Ljubljana is uneven, and spontaneous social settings like family dinners, neighbourhood gatherings, and community events have no structured captioning provision.

Captio AI captions Slovenian conversation in real time, so a deaf or hard-of-hearing person can follow a family dinner in Ljubljana or a neighbourhood gathering in Maribor without depending on a scarce interpreter or asking others to repeat.
